You can appoint someone as interim FBI director? I thought the deputy is the interim until the POTUS nominates and Senate confirms? What stops Trump from appointing some stooge as the "interim" while having no intent on ever getting a real one confirmed by the Senate? That seems to circumvent the process, that the interim basically becomes the permanent.

With the Senate in the hands of the Repubs, I believe he would be confirmed - and see to it the investigation is sabotaged.
