roaming the yard so far this year. They belong to a neighbor a good quarter mile away but they spend a lot of time in our yard. 12 big ones and now three little ones.
Sorry just had to share my good news
We have a good yard for them. I let our fence row grow up for privacy when we first bought this place years ago so its like we have an acre carved out of the woods even though on the other side of my grown up fence rows is fields. I love it

(51,076 posts)These babies are about the size of a freshly hatched chicken right now so they've hatched probably today or yesterday at most. They grow pretty fast. Fun to watch them grow up.

(51,076 posts)last year once they got big enough to make it to the seat of the swing on our back deck then the back of the swing then over to the frame of the swing in the yard close by then up to the bottom limb in the big ass sweet gum tree. Mother would tuck them up under her wings and they'd roost there. As they got older they'd keep going further and further up the tree until they would be 20 feet or so up. We had three make it last year. Once fall gets here they stay home and we don't see them until spring. Looks like the mother of these may be one of the three from last year. Not sure yet though but I'll know once I get a good look at them.

(36,446 posts)They had a tree that had a branch about 4 feet above the ground & the birds would perch on it.It was so cool to see them there. It's also the same yard where I saw two deer humping.

(51,076 posts)hopefully tomorrow I'll get a chance to take a picture of them. I don't want to scare them by approaching them for a picture so I'll have to wait for that opportune time
Be mowing tomorrow afternoon and when we mow they usually are close by eating the bugs that the mower kicks out. When they first started coming around years ago they'd be skittish of the mower but after a while when they figured out that I/we weren't trying to get them they settled down and now just move out of the way until we pass then they're after the bugs or fresh mowed grass or whatever they eat. Last year and now this year is the only two times that they've nested here.

(268,884 posts)Love being close to nature's critters.
We used to go to the same beach at the same time on Saturdays for over two decades. There was a young pelican and he'd move around right next to the two of us swimming the same pattern and in the same area week after week. When I was just floating (after a good swim) he'd come real close. As soon other folks gathered to find out why he was so close to us, peli (as we called her/him) would fly away.
The bird trusted us. They know who won't hurt them. I enjoy being trusted by critters.

(51,076 posts)in my way of seeing things anyway
Our yard is peaceful plus the fact my wife and I give them the space they want when we're all sharing the same space helps in building that trust
I just thought we needed some good news today after so much ignorant Orange Foolius these last few weeks

(1,814 posts)The hospital nearby has a pond.
They come to eat the seed from the bird feeders and we had heavy rains recently so our yard was flooded.
The cats leave them alone. I got out of my car today and they came right over to me, wanting some corn.
They get along nicely with the birds and squirrels.

(6,344 posts)They are beautiful birds! The tail feathers with the iridescent eye, is a natural gift from the bird. They fall off and are collected without any harm to the bird. I have a HUGE bouquet of them in a vase in the living room.

(25,218 posts)It is a large old Army base that used to have a small petting zoo.
They still have peacocks, ducks and deer. But their peacock population had gotten too large and they were giving 50 away.

(27,985 posts)It isn't that I don't want to see them, post haste, but um, something kind of big is happening right now, and I'm afraid they won't get the viewing they deserve.
