When constituents met that remark with jeers, Garrett doubled down. "So he's worse?" Garrett said, literally asking the crowd if they'd rank America's commander-in-chief as greater cause for alarm than the Third Reich. Garrett pointed out people were worried about former President Barack Obama too, and promised that, no matter what, "this great nation will continue to move forward by virtue of the collective of American people."
Feel better now?

(118,282 posts)People nowadays so easily lose their sense of perspective. As I told my neighbor, after her son was fatally stabbed by a lunatic: this is really nowhere near as bad as Okinawa. When my coworker's daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren died in a fiery crash on the interstate, I comforted her by pointing out that the Oklahoma City bombing claimed many more lives. When a tornado wiped out an entire town a few years ago, I wrote a nice letter to the local newspaper, explaining that Mississippi River floods had killed far more people, but they refused to print it for some reason. After the Sandy Hook shootings, I offered to visit the area to contrast the small number of lives lost to the horrors of the siege of Stalingrad, but there was not much interest. I once when to a talk on Auschwitz and tried to contrast the Nazi concentration camps with the devastation of the meteor sixty million years ago that nearly wiped out life on earth -- and you wouldn't believe how nasty some people became!

(8,380 posts)The town hall was held in a church. The church property was surrounded by Trump/Pence and Garrett signs, and a big Trump/Pence campaign bus (left over from the Tea Party "take our country back" movement). There were probably 20 law enforcement officials there (for maybe 150 people) with a police dog. We had to show ID and our invitation to attend, we got a bracelet and were not permitted to leave and come back.
Of course, there was Christian prayer before the "town hall."
No booing, no hissing, no signs, no shouting, no yelling.
He lied, obfuscated, avoided about every question.

(8,380 posts)It's a very, very gerrymandered district. Even Garrett said something like "yes, this district is double-gerrymandered."
He's a pompous, rude, spiteful ass.
