In any case, the memo is yours, and that has compromised your ability to oversee any investigations into Russian meddling. But after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from these matters, because of his own contacts during the campaign with the Russians, the power to launch a truly credible investigation has fallen to you, and you alone.
You have one choice: Appoint a special counsel who is independent of both the department and the White House. No one else would have the standing to assure the public it is getting the truth. While a handful of Republican senators and representatives expressed concern at Mr. Comeys firing, there is as yet no sign that the congressional investigations into Russian interference will be properly staffed or competently run. And Americans can have little faith that the Justice Department, or an F.B.I. run by Mr. Trumps handpicked replacement, will get to the bottom of whether and how Russia helped steal the presidency for Mr. Trump.
-snip-
Few public servants have found themselves with a choice as weighty as yours, between following their conscience and obeying a leader trying to evade scrutiny Elliot Richardson and William Ruckelshaus, who behaved nobly in Watergate, come to mind. You can add your name to this short, heroic list. Yes, it might cost you your job. But it would save your honor, and so much more besides.

(10,495 posts)and his reply was something to the effect that if the circumstances required it...
If the circumstances do not require it already than they never will. Both House and Senate investigations are compromised by the Republicans. Trump has admitted he fired Comey because it was a "fake" news story and he wanted it done! That seems to satisfy the intent requirement for Obstruction of Justice.
Republicans would not impeach before the mid-terms even if Trump shot someone in the head on Pennsylvania Avenue! Sad.

He needs to resign. He has lost all credibility. He should resign in shame.

(6,045 posts)At least not yet. All we know so far is he did not like how Comey handled the Clinton investigation & everything he said about it was true. However, he never said Comey should be removed that was how TRUMP & SESSIONS tried to spin it at first!
Until I see otherwise, it looks like Trump or Sessions asked for Rosenstein's to put his opinion in writing & then they tried to use that to pin the firing on him!! What a joke!

(9,067 posts)This makes me think that he was under a directive to give his unvarnished opinion on what needed to be changed to restore public confidence as it pertained to Dir. Comey.
At the end of the memo he says Comey won't admit what he did wrong and until he does there would be no restoration.
It's more like a write-up/warning than it is a recommendation for firing Comey. I think the White House then used it as justification when the memo was probably not meant to be used in such fashion.
I may be very, very wrong but I distrust the White House that much... and right now I will give these career professionals the benefit of the doubt, especially with the lies and spin from this WH that keep trying to throw us off.

(15,512 posts)Theoretically he might have the authority but it would be the equivalent of publicly eviscerating himself to invoke it unilaterally. Sessions would simply un-recuse himself and that would be the end of Rosenstein.

(19,956 posts)dismissal ? This is a question that must be asked of Rosenstein when he appears before the Senate. If he couldn't stand up to Sessions, then what's the point him being there ?
