Sure to make a daddy proud.

(41,932 posts)I won't say they're all lying about the existence of a deity and its rules for living; I really think most of them believe in what they espouse. But the willful deception of congregants in all religions is so frequent as to be fodder for all kinds of reportage and fiction.
And frankly Huckabee strikes me as the kind of "preacher" who finds the profession politically useful, not spiritually fulfilling. Why shouldn't she be the same?

(9,808 posts)I spent a year of my undergrad at a denomination-affiliated college in a highly attractive place that gave full rides to any minister's kid with a 3.25 high school GPA, so almost a third of my class were PKs. Drinking? Weed? Boinking each other's brains out? Raising hell? If you can think it of a way for a kid raised in the public eye to rebel, the PKs had elevated it to an art form and published a zine. I left that school in part because it was expensive, but also because it was impossible to study. It was more peaceful to attend a 40K person state land-grant with a rep as a party school.
And this is Hucksterbee we're talking about, who has been bearing false witness and making a spectacle of his piety for decades. She was raised by a hypocrite to be a hypocrite.

(115,584 posts)The denomination affiliation wasn't evangelical or fundamentalist (it was Presbyterian), but the PKs still seemed to be determined to rebel or something, because they were the biggest party animals on campus. I recall one in particular who was stoned all the time. They also had a pretty high flunk-out rate, which can't have pleased their preacher dads.

I did manage to graduate with a 3.49 GPA and go on to get an M.A. in French at Wayne State.

(20,998 posts)...Sorry, many of the preachers and "men of god" that I was familiar with were noxious, duplicitous, lying scumbags, and some of their children were just as bad or worse.

Oh, wait. Baptists. Now that I think about it, a whole lot makes more sense.
(And I was never a believer. I actually stopped believing in Jesus before I doubted Santa. But there's social reasons, even as a child)
