By Benjamin Locke
Published on May 12, 2017
What has happened to the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt or even Ronald Reagan?
New York Times columnist Paul Krugman has some answers and they are terribly disturbing for all of us who are patriotic and not among the very richest Americans.
He shows why Republicans, who for generations claimed to be the party of patriots, now refuse to consider an independent investigation of Trump and Russia despite unrefutable evidence that a foreign power is gleefully tampering with our country.
Krugmans answer is that the 2017 Republicans are more interested in serving the desires of the rich and powerful who give them huge donations and when they lose their positions, hire them for wildly over-compensated jobs instead of doing what is right for all Americans.
Krugman explains that today Republican party is nothing like the institution it was even during the Watergate crisis in the 1970s. Then Republican members of Congress were citizens first, writes Krugman, partisans second. But todays G.O.P. is more like a radical, anti-democratic insurgency than a conventional political party.
Where once Republicans opposed Democrats, adds Krugman, today they are dismissive of the legitimacy of the political opposition.
The Dailykos.com puts it bluntly: Krugman believes that the Republican leaderships willingness to turn a blind eye to possible treason reflects that Partys transformation in recent decades into an organization solely dedicated to the lowering of taxes for its multi-millionaire donor base. Trumps attempt to destroy the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) simply provided an irresistible opportunity fo the party to fulfill that prime function.
Everything else including the risk of undermining the integrity of our Constitutional government has become secondary to that overriding imperative, adds Dailykos.com.
Krugman drives home the point that this poisonous treason to ensure the rich get richer is not just because Trump was elected by a few electoral college votes; it is part of the transformation of the Republicans into a party that openly and blatantly favors the rich over everyone else.
What this means is that even if Trump were to disappear, the party that nominated and elected him president remains, and their traitorous leadership and cabal of followers will continue to hold power until the American people wake up on election day and renounce their lies, trickery, and deceptions.
Only then will the Republican party be forced to reform itself and the democratic system can be restored to balance.
Amerian politicians from both sides of the aisle used to fight like hell during elections but then come together to do what is best for America and all its people. We either get back to that, or we all learn to say yes, master Putin in Russian.

(13,485 posts)You asked a question so I figured you wanted to discuss an answer. You don't seem to have been looking for an answer because you knew the practical one and I share that position. But there is so much about this situation that's not within constitutional bounds we have to beware of what is happening not just see what we want or expect. That takes facing all possible outcomes and they are not all practical or reasonable just as the political powers that be are neither practical nor reasonable.
Question: who owns and controls the voting machines and the process? I think I know the practical answer but it's not one that allows a simple one word solution to, "what are we going to do...".
As for the last part of your statement, I agree.
I'll stand down.

(2,690 posts)But don't condemn them. I doubt they thought -- any of them -- that Trump had a smidgen of a chance to actually win. Their decision not-to-vote was made from what they thought was a safe position. After all, when Hillary won the election, they would be able to say they played no part in her victory.
Turns out, to the horror of all rational people, including the non-Hillary voters who felt Senator Sanders had been jobbed, as well as the rest of the world, they were wrong.
But this is not the time to let our anger and rancor over their bad decision in the last (maybe final) Presidential election drive away any potential future voters against Trump and the Republican Party.
My feeling in the matter is that any voter who denied Hillary a vote because they felt robbed by the rigged DNC primary process needs to be talked down from their airy stulos and persuaded to vote in 2018 and 2020 (assuming there is still a vote to be made) -- and vote if not FOR someone, then against the Orange faced fascist from Mar a Lago and any member of the Party that supports him.

Paul Ryan & Republican Establishment Used Hacked Info From Russia Against Democrats:
Let's not forget that a super PAC tied to Paul Ryan used material provided by Russia's hacking of the DNC and DCCC.
It was known that Russia had stolen material from the DNC and DCCC and a Paul Ryan Super PAC and as well as other Republican groups used it.
It wasn't just Hillary Clinton being attacked. It wasn't just Trump benefiting. There's potentially more collusion than just that between Trump's team and Russia.

BTW both Sessions and Pence are up to their eyeballs in this crap too. I have some questions about Chaffitz too.

Maybe not today, maybe not next year but one day everyone involved in committing it will hopefully be brought before a court of law to answer for what they did.

(5,730 posts)Their own acts are probably far beyond something that would cause them not to get elected...maybe, acts that could land them in jail. Too much risk for a full open hearing on anything, including impeachment.
Our best hope is the 25th Amendment or he eats too much KFC...something that brings him down.

(37,648 posts)Sessions lied under oath, then said he recused himself from the Russian investigation. He then got involved in the firing of the leader of that investigation in the FBI, which as Trump said, was to put a stop to that investigation.
The Republicans should DO something about Sessions' actions.
The Republicans should DO something about naming an independent prosecutor or investigator for the Russian collusion matter.
The Republicans should DO something about Trump firing Comey days after he said he planned on expanding the investigation, for the purpose of stopping the investigation.

The obvious disregard for rule of law, the flagrant disrespect for the ideals of the Founding Fathers, the willingness to accept russian masters controlling their politicians. It isn't just the politicians who are protecting trump, it is all the supporters who are not willing to defend our freedoms. They are traitors.

(837 posts)His article cuts through the BS, with clear, if unwelcome language.
It is harsh. We would rather not accept his conclusion. It strikes at the heart of Democracy and America.
I believe it is true.
The problem it leaves me with is ... what next? There is no hand across the aisle to reach to. Plus,
Dems are waaaaaaay behind on the political infrastructure building that the Conservatives have patiently built over the past 40 years to get to this point.
Frankly, they kicked our ass on this. We thought our ideas and belief in the common good was sufficient. Guess what?
It wasn't.
And the GOP push is about nothing but the raw power to get what they want. Mostly for the wealthy.
And power only respects and responds to ... greater power.

(2,065 posts)Putin and the Russian oligarchs and said, "That's what we want, that's where we want to take the country", and the rest is history, as they say. Luckily, the wind was at their backs because the dumbing down of the American educational system and the rise of reality TV in recent years has left us with a lot of dumb and gullible voters. And besides, Trump played a successful billionaire on "reality" TV. The bait was perfect. The whole vicarious Horatio Alger bit.
I think it has become almost like an immutable law of physics now that Republican legislators nowadays will never get behind a bill unless there is a massive tax cut or other form of giveaway to the rich in it. And the recent "American Health Care Act" is a prime example. It wasn't "healthcare" at all - it was more like death care - the human sacrifice of the lives of unfortunate poor and working class Americans on the altar of the rich and their all-consuming GREED.

(254 posts)I think it is very clear that the republican party is as a matter of fact committing treason by working with Putin and his henchmen to install their puppets (both Trump and Pence) into the presidency and vice presidency of our United States of America.
If the investigation has the definitive "smoking gun" proof of this treason they need to release it to the public. How else are voters going to make better judgement on whom to vote for in our next elections. By doing so may be the only way currently to force Trump and Pence to resign. Unfortunately, all I hear from democrats is a lot of blather and they refuse to say if they do have the goods on Trumpocracy.
Otherwise I think the accusations of "wrong doing" or treason will not cause any change in the 2018 elections.
Even lefties news anchors like Rachel Maddow still dance around the word treason and so far will not speak truth to powerful governmental institutions or the rest of us...
