Lee Atwater mastered the politics of resentment in 1988. Willie Horton, flag factories, the pledge of allegiance as a wedge issue, etc.

Limbaugh, Newt, O'Reilly, Rove and a thousand imitators got rich or elected taking that resentment to the next level. That led to Trump.
