My mom will never understand me.

A good church-going Catholic. Very nice person. Does charity work. A very sweet person.,

I don't get along with her on politics at all. I am very pro-choice.

How this amazing woman gave birth to this hippie, dope-smoking pro-choice, feminist, bi, anti-Trump person is a mystery.

But I still love her

My "Goldwater Republican", union-busting, anti-immigrant, misogynist father raised two socialist/feminist daughters. He's long gone and my sis and I often chuckle over the irony.

She grew up in a house that, although attended church for the usual holidays, was, at least in my experience, largely agnostic and had framed portraits of three people on their wall: FDR, JFK, and Jesus Christ. My mother is right wing, but pretends to be left leaning. She likes to think that she's not racist or a homophobe, but tends to say things in conversation that give her true feelings away. I'm not even joking when I tell you she thinks that she's not racist because she has a very close black friend and friends who are gay. Yet she will say things and do things that clearly show her true beliefs. Hell she voted for Donald Trump because...wait for it...she didn't like or trust Trump, but believed Pence would mitigate and craziness....and she didn't vote for Clinton because she didn't like her and Kaine was a "papist"....nevermind the fact that her son is a "papist", as she says, as well as her daughter-in-law and grandkids...and even her own deceased husband, the greatest dad anyone could have ever asked for!

I love my mother dearly, she's all I have left after my father died...but damn, I wish she could see how insane her political stances are!!!

I just deleted the 40-year saga...

She is charming and has a powerful personality. On Facebook I read how many people love her as the "Queen of Our Tribe." She's a good Mom to her boys. And like me, she's a liberal, a feminist, and politically active.

But I don't think she even likes me, and I don't trust her with my heart after all she has put me through. This was not how it was supposed to be, but it is what it is until someday perhaps it will change.

However, I got a call today asking why I had not responded to her fb invite (I didn't see it) and did I want to come over for a Mother's Day brunch on Sunday, and I responded with gladness that yes, I would like to come.

I will be there, and I am glad she remembered.

It's not easy on either side of the divide.

very important to each other, but we think and react differently, which keeps us from being as close as we want to be, and chats often require evading the rocks we're running onto.

Otoh, she called yesterday to tell me she couldn't send me flowers because we have such terrible florists here that she couldn't bear paying for such ugly arrangements (apparently dyed carnations everywhere); and, wonderfully, on that subject we were as one. Our enjoyable shredding of my cheap local florists was a gift in itself.

She tried so hard to get that to stick with me and my sister!

But she raised us to be Democrats!

I think she does not understand how i never took to make up and styling my hair and wearing fancier clothes!

By the time I was 18 (1976), I was getting into feminism and the pro-choice movement. I quit going to church. I know it broke her heart but I had to stand with my beliefs.

Both my folks, gone now, were good Kennedy Dems.
My mom worked for Head Start and knew Sargent Shriver.

My mom recently informed me that I'm not an atheist. Again. I'm 50 years old and and decided to to go atheist at 17. It's a bitch move. Even my priest admonished her when I decided to not go through confirmation. She tried to embarrass me in front of him. Thankfully, Father Frank is a tolerant priest and gave her a good Irish scolding. While I like the religious teaching, I'm done with religion. I've read a lot of books on religion and atheism, and while I understand why some of my friends are religious, I can't believe in it. When I die, I just die.

I ducked Mother's Day. My Mom said a lot of stupid shit about my divorce, and that's a time I needed support, not divicevness. She's normally not like that. But I want no part of her company when even my ex-wife is able to spend an hour or two with me.

This might be the shittiest Mother's Day of all time. We usually celebrate the day before, but I just told them I wanted no part of it. My Dad is good, but my sister and mother are fucking vipers. If I attended the dinner, I wouldn't spare a word and it was better just to not attend. Probably would have made both of them cry. And then not eat any of the dinner. Shit.
