Toon: Scott Adams (Dilbert) goes full climate science denialist

PZ Myers "dissects the shit" out of the latest Dilbert.

I don’t normally read Dilbert — I’ve seen far too much of the benighted ignorant psyche of its creator — but this one was just laid out on a table at the coffee shop yesterday, and I knew I’d have to deal with it. In this one, Dilbert goes full climate science denialist. This might be fun, to dissect Dilbert, because even though it will kill what little humor is present in it, at least we’ll have a good time laughing at Scott Adams. Let’s dissect the shit out of this thing.

OK, this is sort of fine. I think it’s a good idea for companies to think about what impact climate change will have on them, and how they affect the environment. I’m at a green university, and we’ve had these sorts of discussions. Still do, all the time.

It is definitely true that human activity is warming the Earth. It will lead to a global catastrophe, depending on how you define catastrophe: it will cause acute economic disruption, resource wars, and the death of millions. Is that catastrophic enough for you?

Even bought one of his books back in the day before he had embraced his inner right-wing asshole.

I was like, this idiot can't draw and isn't funny.

The cartoon has made me laugh a few times in the intervening years, but his latest incarnation as right wing dipshit sort of confirms my initial impression.

He worked in a corporate environment (one of the Baby Bells if I recall). His cartoons struck a chord with those of us who worked in a similar environment and faced the same sorts of situations and personalities as those in his strips. Then he got rich and quit. He lost touch with the very thing that made him successful and no longer as any sort of reality basis for his cartoon. I haven't read them in years.

Trump ~ Clown Genius ~Dilbert by Scott Adam's blog

Scott Adams the creator of Dilbert seems to think Trump is a genius clown and that is why he is so difficult to take down. He blogs a lot about Trump.

http://blog.dilbert.com/post/126589300371/clown-genius
"On the surface, and several layers deep as well, Trump appears to be a narcissistic blow-hard with inadequate credentials to lead a country.

The only problem with my analysis is that there is an eerie consistency to his success so far. Is there a method to it? Is there some sort of system at work under the hood?

Probably yes. Allow me to describe some of the hypnosis and persuasion methods Mr. Trump has employed on you. (Most of you know I am a trained hypnotist and this topic is a hobby of mine.)

For starters, Trump literally wrote the book on negotiating, called The Art of the Deal. So we know he is familiar with the finer points of persuasion. For our purposes today, persuasion, hypnosis, and negotiating all share a common set of tools, so I will conflate them.

Would Trump use his negotiation and persuasion skills in the campaign? Of course he would. And we expect him to do just that.

But where is the smoking gun of his persuasion? Where is his technique laid out for us to see.

Everywhere. "
