Veterans of White House scandals from Watergate to Plamegate have an important message for Team Trump: Its time to think about lawyering up.
In the past week, a Senate committee began issuing subpoenas in its investigation into Russian contacts with President Donald Trumps staff and other associates during the 2016 election campaign and transition, while the FBI continues its own criminal investigation. Trump himself fired FBI Director James Comey and then, in the aftermath, said the Russia probe was made up and appeared to threaten Comey on Twitter.
Theres obviously a risk here, said Washington white-collar defense attorney Robert Luskin. And thats not any kind of judgment on [Trumps] personal integrity or absence of it, but the apparent fact he doesnt seem to be very sensitive about norms and about risks.
Its an axiom of Washington scandals that the cover-up tends to be worse than the crime and its lower- or mid-level people who wind up getting caught in the worst legal trouble, usually for tangential offenses like perjury or obstruction of justice.

(685 posts)can't be firing comey as he works at the president's pleasure. Whatever is going on before Comey was fired is still going on. I dont' see obstruction of justice here. If saying the Russia probe was "made up" and he believes it, is it still perjury?
If Trump had illegal dealings with the Russians then lets get going and charge him and his team. Impeach him, jail them all
Sorry just getting tired of waiting for things to happen

From what I've read, most legal scholars think that impeachment is the only course of action to address presidential crimes. (What happens after that is pretty much untested.) But "high crimes and misdemeanors" are subject to interpretation so Congress doesn't exactly have to meet any particular legal standard to impeach anyway.
As I've said before- Trump is psycho and he's not going to get better. He will continue to do crazy things and each time he does another couple of Repubs (hopefully) begin to consider Plan B. Eventually they will get there. I read somewhere that the election in GA6 is going to be an important indicator for some Repubs- if they become convinced that putting up with the craziness isn't even getting them any political victories there is little reason left to stay aboard SS Trump while it's sinking.
