This is a battle between those who believe in a multicultural future and those who don't.

No amount of blandishments will cajole Deplorables into casting aside their cultural grievances and give up their desire to return to a land where the only voices heard are straight white men.

We will never win them over. There is no need to. They are a dying breed. There are more of us than them.

A multicultural future is ours if we are willing to fight for it.

we were pandering to extremism.

Our problem is that malignant, extremist forces successfully destroyed the alliance between more moderate ideologies on both sides that kept the hard-cores and outright haters mostly in check. And with that, by playing on massive anxiety about rampaging change and exaggerating genuine differences, and by employing modern communications as a form of poison Kool-Aid, they were able to unite all factions of the right against the left. They split the middle.

THE ONLY THING HOLDING THOSE WARRING FACTIONS, WHO DESPISE EACH OTHER, TOGETHER is that they are united against us. Currently. If we disappeared, the coalition on the would fall apart. Probably the same day.

We're not going to disappear, so we have to find other ways. Our solution has to include weakening the wall holding them together by giving moderates room to separate from the hard-cores, not strengthening it by attacking those once-moderates and building the wall higher.

It's the blending of biology, transportation services, a global economy, and other factors. The horse has left the barn. Closing the door won't change a thing. IMO, what we are witnessing is the death throes of a patriarchal culture. A culture that values dominance over equality, aggression over cooperation, and individuality over community. Where the masculine is exalted and the feminine is enslaved. It's death is imminent and they know it. They are fearful because they know the game is changing and they won't be the winners.

I remember studying genetics in undergrad and coming to the realization that nature PREFERS multiculturalism. As we learned about the genetic mutations that concentrate in closed populations, I realized that genetic diversity is healthful for the future of all species, including ours. Homo sapiens interbred with neanderthals, and we likely have valuable characteristics acquired from them. Those who do not accept the benefits of diversity will end up on the ash heap of history; as Neil DeGrasse Tyson says, science doesn't care if you believe in it or not.

Culture is unrelated to genetics.

This was Boas' contribution to the insanity of the KKK and eugenics.

Sadly, I suspect it's now actually more widely accepted by young progressives than by conservatives. It's a nice metaphor, but many confuse metaphor with reality.

are definitely not an answer.

I'm 57 and I've been through several cycles of this next-generation-demographics-will-save-us thinking and it's never worked.

Why are college republicans a thing?

Why are neo-nazis mostly young?

Why haven't things started improving as some of the old, bad guys have retired or died off?

The only generation that even wanted to fix things grew up just ahead of me. Most (not all) of them turned from hippies to yuppies and helped create the money-grubbing disaster we inhabit today.

I find myself saying the same thing on a regular basis: that it is NOT going to die off. I've seen the same cycles you have.

I was just hoping you had a suggestion.

I've learned a lot via the proliferation of the Alt-Right. There are a significant number of people, including young people, who truly do NOT want any sort of diversity. Not only that, but it's based on supremacy, not merely "it's best if different groups basically keep to themselves."

I've also realized how many people don't really want democracy and do prefer authoritarianism and a hierarchical society, with white, straight, preferably wealthy men at the top of that society, of course.

It's really disheartening. The one thing that has kept me going most of my life is an unwavering belief in humankind...that there are enough people out there who do genuinely care for the well-being other humans who are not related to them and who are not on their "team" to overcome this corrosive apathy, greed and growing cruelty.

I don't have that belief any longer. It started dimming throughout the campaign but 11/9 did me in.

But guys seem to have this hope for an instant-revolution and when it doesn't happen, they give up. Women and POC can't afford to give up, they know it's a long slog.

They aren't called Conservatives without reason. Looking back at our history, Republicans have made it their policy to oppose various minority or underprivileged groups to keep them submissive and repressed by any means -- fair or foul -- so Republicans can maintain their hold on power. They have largely been successful at that.

There might indeed be more people who lean toward Democratic policies, but the Party has never been very good at getting out a clear and concise message, or organizing all the widespread, disparate and multicultural groups that are under our very big tent.

Equality for all changes everything.

I cannot more highly recommend Steve Phillips and Brown is the new....

Wed, May 18 2016 - 6:30pm

"Steve Phillips, Civil Rights Attorney; Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress; New York Times Best-selling Author, Brown Is the New White In conversation .....................The U.S. population has fundamentally changed, says Steve Phillips, and a new American voting majority has been created by progressive people of color along with progressive white voters. Philips says these two groups make up 51 percent of all eligible voters in America, and that majority is growing larger every day. By failing to properly appreciate this reality, progressives are at risk of missing this moment in history—and losing. Phillips' new book is a searing indictment of the Democratic Party’s practice of courting white swing voters and a discussion of how America’s changed demographics have revolutionary implications for U.S. politics in 2016 and beyond.

A leader in national politics for 30 years, Steve Phillips has had a front-row seat to these extraordinary political changes. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended Stanford University, where he was a leader in the anti-apartheid and multicultural education movements. He was elected to the San Francisco Board of Education at age 28..."

it will happen. I only have to look out my front door to know that. My block, which is in a residential neighborhood in St. Paul, MN, has changed in the 13 years I've lived in my current house from 80% WASP to less than 20%. My new Hmong, Vietnamese and Somali immigrant neighbors have purchased their homes on my block, one at a time, over those years. Today, the neighborhood of almost identical homes build in the 1950s is home to new families from very diverse places. When it was built, it was home to white families after WWII.

I like my new neighbors. They're lovely, and have brought new life to the neighborhood, with children once again playing on the sidewalks and family gatherings filling the streets with cars parked at the curbs. It's America, and those are my neighbors. People who don't like multiculturalism appear to have gone somewhere else. Into the suburbs, I guess.

Welcome to America, everyone. I'm pleased to meet you!

I'm Irish, Finnish, English and Czech. I think mixed races are beautiful, most especially when you add darker skinned cultures. I'm not really impressed how the "pure" races have governed so far, no matter what the color. It's time for mixed raced people to rule the world.

The truth is, it can be hard learning about and accepting other cultural practices. But I really think most nations have benefitted from cultural integration. Granted, there are some universal laws that some cultures cross that I don't agree with (oppression of women, genital mutilation, etc, etc), but for the most part, cultural integration shakes up things and adds that extra "spice".

Not because the old haters are dying off, they raised children to continue that mentality. But because more minorities are being born than whites. No we won't win them over. As a Mexican-American, I am so over even trying. So ultimately, it's us vs. them and as the population of the country continues to change, we will have to continue to work together to fight the enemy. That's what they are now. They are the enemy of minorities and women.
