"Lawrence ODonnell, MSNBC in Talks for 10 PM Slot
Lawrence O'Donnell and MSNBC are in contract talks that could result in the anchor staying with his 10 p.m. show, "The Last Word."

(16,730 posts)To can the #2 rated show on the network that brings in viewers and money.
If it were not for Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow, and Lawrence O'Donnell, this viewer would be somewhere else. These 3 make some sense of the insane world that is the Trump era.

(5,953 posts)I just think they are, like all MSM clowns, worried about being labelled 'too liberal.' So they want to get rid of some of the people who appear to be too partisan, and replace them with a few country club Republicans, and then claim to be 'fair and balanced.'
Ironically, 'fair and balanced' Fox News is the most biased, politically partisan network of them all, and they raked in a FORTUNE by appealing to a politically partisan group of viewers. So, if MSNBC is still interested in making money, they're doing the wrong thing. If they trying to chase the mythical fair and balanced journalist title, they're just being stupid and self destructive.
But then again, that's the one thing that the right wing news media has that the left wing news media doesn't. SHAMELESSNESS. They KNOW everybody is snickering at them when they say they're 'unbiased,' but they don't care. They care more about winning and making money than they do about people snickering at them. And I can't say that about the center-left media world.
As Bill Maher said about Democratic politicians: "All you have to do is accuse somebody of being a liberal, and he'll put on an orange vest and run off to the woods to kill animals." Funny, but painfully true.

(58,785 posts)I don't like the networks' picking up right-wing commentators either. But that doesn't mean they want to be Fox. Fox's viewership is dying off from old age and calcified brains. Young people, who are far less conservative than Fox's viewers, even the young conservatives, are the ones the advertisers want to draw.
People on the far left should, for the sake of their own understanding, recognize and accept that their numbers are too small for good representation by a network. MSNBC, to its credit, tried some shows aimed more their way a couple decades after Donahue was suppressed, and it didn't work. But, notably, Donahue was not a radical with a radical message. He was a liberal pushing progressive messages to a hugely receptive mainstream audience. This difference that was the key to his great success.
As for Ed Schultz, let's face it. He is better suited to radicals watching RT than to typical left-wingers. I didn't like his style on MSNBC, and if he came back on his knees and toes the MSNBC line I wouldn't watch him after RT.
"Uppity's" an effective dog whistle in many situations, but it doesn't apply to Melissa. They gave her a platform to address social justice and women's issues, and she just didn't draw enough viewership, even with Rachel following. I found wallowing each night in discussion of the latest outrages and endless hashing over needed solutions more depressing than stimulating. So I eventually spent little time with Melissa (and also turned off Rachel on her abortion rights jags) preferring shorter print news updates.
Obermann's exit ended well-publicized several-year conflicts with his bosses; lots of personalities involved, not just issues. Yes, they did want him to tone his combative message down, but he could have done that and still held his hill. He chose not to, and eventually the pot finally boiled over. I was sorry.
Btw, fwiw, except for Rachel on video, and O'Donnell on video occasionally, I don't watch cable news at all. Their outrageously dishonest and irresponsible coverage of the election caused me to say no more. I recommend it.

(16,730 posts)launching both Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell to where they are now. You cannot imagine how I miss COUNTDOWN.
I loved watching Ed Schultz, Al Sharpton, Melissa Harris Perry, Cenk Uyger(The Young Turks), even the Cycle. These shows are/were far superior than anything on CNN or FOX.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)and then Rachel and O'Donnell. The latter are still watched a lot of the time.
MSNBC'sevening lineup is far superior to the budget daytime one, but I took to heart results of studies reporting that, on testing, Fox viewers knew less about their nation and world than people who watched no news at all (!) but that, though CNN and MSNBC viewers did know more than the no-news people, they really weren't all that much better.
MSNBC is not a news network, of course, which accounts for some of it, but their programming was also so appallingly dishonest and self-serving during the election campaigns (not worse than before, just with such obvious destructive effect) that I said goodbye to almost all of it. Same for CNN.
Interesting how political talk shows seem to get more fact-based in the late hours, something that must reflect different audiences.
Do you or anyone remember the old long-running Nightline with Ted Koppel long, long ago? Great, intelligent show. For a long time I waited for it by watching through a horror of a right-wing political program that preceded it. Wish I could remember the guy's name, think he had a mental breakdown later or something. He used a sort of gladiatorial format where he would do verbal battle with "liberals" chosen for their extreme inarticulateness and scrawny builds, and he'd stride in and do a ritual rape of a couple of women from the audience (grab and "kiss" them Trump-style) before engaging.

(58,785 posts)him and tRump, and also Gov. Christie when he'd threaten constituents by bearing down with his 300 pounds and shoving his face in theirs to deliver his insults. Downey was way over the top on his show, but they all offer a domineering thuggery that their particular fans love.
Just think of the contrast with liberal shows, which have NEVER offered animal boorishness and brutishness as a product. I like to think that back then some thoughtful, more moderate conservatives were also waiting for Nightline, which ran from 1980-2005 (just looked). Fox News opened in 1996, and after that most conservatives insisted all other news sources were corrupt.

(1,129 posts)if I recall, he would smoke and blow the smoke in people's faces but I am not sure if that is a correct recollection. I believe he died of cancer.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)looking for those pictures. He'd certainly have had to be. But he regretted much of his boorishness and did a lot of apologizing to individuals he'd behaved badly to before his death, not in fear of fire but rather of being remembered for his worst.
I feel sure tRump is simply not capable of that level of self awareness, so in that there is no comparison.

BP would advertise way more than normal for the first 3 years of the spill to keep the victim's stories out of the news and have everyone believe they had settled the claims out of the non-existent $20 billion dollar fund.

(3,335 posts)"The Last Word" and I would be very disappointed if his contract was not renewed. I also told them that I was disappointed with the decision to give more of the liberal time slots to rightwingers who have their own networks and dominate talk radio, particularly the slot given to Greta Van Susteran and Nicole Wallace. While I like Nicole as a person, I didn't think she deserved that time slot at the expense of a true liberal. Besides, it was people like her that tried to normalize Trump by saying that "my Dad is a big fan of his" and now we're stuck with someone whose ill equipped for the job and threatens our democracy and our relationship with our allies.

(51 posts)I actually wrote them an open letter on the progressive blog network I work for, emailed Phil Griffin and NBC Universal, and called NBC Universal and Comcast.
Personally, I think Andy Lack is at the bottom of all of this. When he returned in 2015 is when they started to slowly but surely lurch to the right. That's what got us 3 hours of Joe Scarborough, got us supposed "straight news" all day instead of shows like The Reid Report, Now With Alex Wagner, Ronan Farrow Daily, The Cycle, etc. It's what got us Nicolle Wallace at 4, Chuck Todd at 5, Greta Van Susteren at 6, and got Joy Reid and Al Sharpton shuttled to weekends while right-wingers got plum primetime slots.
Hopefully our pressure did something.
