5. One veteran's thoughts

In response to your question, this veteran (retired Army JAG) thinks it is inappropriate.

Under 4 USC 8, "The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."

As bad as things are, flying the flag upside down should not be used as a signal of displeasure with the political situation.

We should be waiving the flag - at protests.

Yes, I'm distressed, alarmed, angry....

My bottom line is that this country is bigger (and better) than the President. We have a constitutional process to deal with attacks on the Republic like those coming from the President. It is the job of citizens to insist that the Congress go through that process.

We, the people, should take to the streets - wave OUR flag (right-side up please) - and insist that Congress do its job.

I want to honor those who fought AND fight for it.

But, I will keep all my flags down for now. Not going up or upside down.

I saw a lot of these at Occupy protests several years ago and did not feel it should be a political statement either.
