As much as some people don't like him, he's still a mainstream Democrat, and may want to bring a measure of repute back to the Bureau.

He was very centrist and finished his career as an independent.
Yes he was a VP candidate but I think he was a terrible choice. He was a big problem in the early days of Obama when we should have had a super majority in the senate.
