Maybe this was covered here already. If so, I missed it.
You may recall recently that Dem Senators Wyden (Oregon) and Rep. Senator Rand Paul (Kentucky) were co-sponsoring an amendment to the recently-passed Agriculture bill that would legalize cultivation of industrial hemp. When I heard about it, I joined the push to get it passed. What happened?
I recently received a response to my letter to Texas Repub. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson urging her to support the amendment. She stated that just before the bill passed, the amendment was pulled from the bill, but no explanation as to why.
Has anyone heard why it was pulled? Naturally, I figure they were bought off by big timber, or big pharma, or big whatever. This was one of the best chances in a long time of making hemp legal, and I am really pissed at Wyden and Paul.

Wyden Statement on Hemp Amendment to the Farm Bill
Thursday, June 21, 2012
Washington, D.C. U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) issued the following statement on the amendment to the Farm bill he introduced lifting prohibitions on the growing of industrial hemp:
I firmly believe that American farmers should not be denied an opportunity to grow and sell a legitimate crop simply because it resembles an illegal one. I fought for an amendment that would have recognized industrial hemp as a legitimate crop, but since doing so requires amending the Controlled Substances Act it was considered non-germane to the current debate and could not be brought up for a vote. Raising this issue has sparked a growing awareness of exactly how ridiculous the U.S.s ban on industrial hemp is. Im confident that if grassroots support continues to grow and Members of Congress continue to hear from voters then common sense hemp legislation can move through Congress in the near future.

(26,366 posts)Hemp: Charles Pope reports that Sen. Ron Wyden's effort to include a provision in the farm bill to formally classify hemp as a legitimate crop failed Thursday as the Senate finished work on the bill without considering his amendment.
The official reason was that the "hemp amendment" was not germane because it edged into the Controlled Substances Act. Wyden's amendment would have excluded industrial hemp from the definition of marijuana. He hoped to attach it to the farm bill.

Of course the excuse is bullshit, and everyone knows it.

(9,510 posts)If you don't know upfront that the Controlled Substances Act would have to be modified? I would fault Wyden and Paul for being ignorant. We as citizens might not "know" this, but Senators ought to.
And so where is the effort to amend the Controlled Substances Act and how could that happen? No word on that.
Assholes. Sounds like a convenient way to put it off, IYAM.
