Message from Senator Casey on Healthcare....
Today I participated in a conference call with Senator Casey and his healthcare legislative team. This call was organized through the PA Health Access Network (PHAN). Senator Casey was explicit in sharing that if healthcare becomes just a fight in DC then the democrats will lose. He suspects the Senate will put up a bill that will pass and they will do that as soon as they have the votes. We were told that the process of writing a Senate healthcare bill has NOT slowed down despite the Trump White House crisis. Senator Casey said this bill will then go to the House and their members will have to make a decision on if they will pass the Senate bill or stick with their House bill. He said the House will have to decide between ideology and morals.
PHAN is hearing the new CBO score will be released next week on Monday or Wednesday... they stated to TWEET like crazy about this and tag all your legislators.
Senator Toomey is one of two leads focusing on Medicaid. He has expressed public support for funding caps to Medicaid which would end Medicaid as a social safety net. This is bad news!!!!
Senator Casey and his team made it very clear that us, on the ground, are the ones who have the power to stop this NOT the democrats in Congress. He said our voices matter and we need to speak as loud as we can.
His and his teams recommendations were:
(1) Write letters to the editor about healthcare ESPECIALLY if you have a personal story. If you need help with this please email me and I will link you with resources.
(2) Send letters to your legislators. He said his office wants personal stories ASAP!!!! He also suggested sending those stories to Senator Toomey and your Congressman. He said DO NOT forget about the House because this will go back to them.
(3) Write op-eds to your local papers so you get to write about your story in longer format. If you need to know more about how to do this please contact me directly.
(4) Call you representatives non-stop and encourage anyone you know with personal stories related to healthcare to please call and share their stories.
(5) Anyone with personal healthcare stories please visit your Senators' and Congressmen's offices to share them in person. Many offices require you to make an appointment.
Important points made by Senator Casey:
(1) The GOP healthcare bill is a tax reform bill being disguised as a healthcare bill. It will be the largest transfer of resources from the poor and middle class to the super rich in American history. People making $300 million dollars per year will get a $7 million tax break which equals approximately 400 American families. These millionaires will see a huge tax break while the poor, sick, middle class, and elderly lose Medicaid, important patient protections, quality healthcare (both privately bought and employer bought), and jobs in the healthcare industry.
(2) Medicaid is under attack!!!! He begged us to not forget to fight for Medicaid since in PA over 1 million people receive Medicaid benefits.
(3) The GOP claim that preexisting conditions are protected in the McCarthy amendment is a lie. If any of you have received a letter from Senator Toomey reiterating this lie (I have in response to my healthcare letters to him.), Senator Casey said to write him back and call him on the lie. Also bring it to the media's attention.
