(11,175 posts)The vandalism was done by anonymous IP's, i.e., people who were not registered Wikipedians. The semi-protection means that anons and very recently registered users won't be able to edit the page.
IOW, while some people are tweeting and getting all upset, the Wikipedia volunteers are going about the business of maintaining and improving the encyclopedia.
