Sorry, but Kushner is NOT orthodox Jewish

What orthodox rabbi gives dispensation to travel on Shabbat?

Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner fly to Saudi Arabia - on Shabbat: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/229870

While the couple observe the Sabbath and ordinarily do not travel from Friday evening till Saturday night, they have in the past received special rabbinic dispensation to be transported on the Sabbath, though still refraining from driving themselves.

A White House official confirmed to Politico that Kushner and Ivanka Trump would be traveling with the President on Friday, and that they had received dispensation from a rabbi after consulting him about the trip. The official did not name which rabbi had given the couple permission to travel.

Did the same rabbi give him permission to eat kid boiled in its mother's milk when he's in Saudi? What a load of crap!

are not the religion they claim is no better than refusing to accept the sex or race claimed. Aren't there enough genuine issues to disapprove of in that crowd making up insults and without attacking their religious affiliation also?

If I thought this kind of stuff was appropriate to wallow in, I'd have joined the Freepers.

A sort of halfway between Orthodox and Conservative. This group tends to be fairly observant but willing to break rules when convenient.

I would call myself back then Conservadox. I have no problem with someone traveling on Shabbat as long as he or she does not claim to be Orthodox. And this rabbi giving permission is just a slap in the face.

But they never wanted to call themselves Conservadox, for the same reason that they were hesitant to fully embrace being Orthodox. They had issues with the status and treatment of women.

My SIL once said that they might like to be called "Orthative," if such a thing existed.

Funny thing is, she is the more frum of us. The shul I used to go to did not have a mehitza, but women had to sit in the back. They couldn't participate (like have an aliyah). To be honest, it was kind of schizophrenic. There were more allowances for women to be seen and follow along with the service, but they had to be kept at arms length. After a year and a half at that shul, I moved and joined a Conservative shul. It was extremely progressive and I liked it a lot.

consider himself an Orthodox Jew - I'm saying your average ORTHODOX rabbi wouldn't be giving out this kind of consideration for partying at the inauguration and flying to Saudi Arabia. Just wouldn't happen.

Your average Orthodox rabbi would tell him to postpone his flight until Sunday. The article says it couldn't find out who the rabbi was. I am envisioning a friend of The Don's personal physician. In other words, a crack pot.

The whole thing is bullshit. First for the inauguration and now for this. Your average Jewish person would never get the same consideration - the Sabbath is serious stuff (some say the most important of the 10 commandments).

A man goes to a wise rabbi and asks if he can fly on Shabbat.

The rabbi responded that he could as long as he kept his seatbelt on then it's as if he's wearing the plane.

I could not care less if someone tells me they are Jewish but prefers to eat BLTs. But when there is a fuss made over how he is Orthodox and Ivanka converted and they go to shul every week, well I don't want to hear about how he can have special permission to fly on Shabbat.

The fact that his son-in-law was Orthodox was a big deal when tRump was trying to promote his pro-Jewish crap during his campaign. You can't have it both ways. Either you are Orthodox or not.

they are teachers, learned in torah.

they can help you understand and interpret the teachings of judaism to apply them to your life, but they do not "give permission" for anything.

well, at least not in the broad, spiritual sense. they can "give permission" in the sense of whether or not there are any repercussions in synagogue, but that has more to do with how a rabbi runs the synagogue, not with the religion per se.

If Kushner chooses to travel on Shabbat, that is on him. He needs to learn this is not Catholicism where a priest can absolve you of your sins.

edit: I went back and checked the article again. The term they used was "dispensation".
