-Obstruction of Justice (evidence in public, FFS)
-Potential Abuse of Power ( traitor giving top secret intel to Russians in Oval Office - jeopardizing National Security and our ally(s)) Also, now public.
What's the strategy? IMO, at this point we look weak by not calling a spade a spade. Hell I'm aware the rethugs won't do it but the Dems in Congress need to not confuse the citizens by saying it's too soon. It gives the appearance that our traitor isn't guilty of impeachable offenses.
How long can this runaway train (leaks, thank God) keep going? Seriously, are we to wait another year(s) for Special Counsel to wrap this up in a bow? The impeachable evidence is public. Show Americans that the rethugs, once again, are aiding and abetting an enemy of the U.S. when they don't vote for impeachment in the House.
Mueller, FBI, and congressional committees can continue investigations into Russian cyberops, money/financial crimes, etc. Then they can actually indict traitor tiny hands once he's impeached as long as the statue of limitations hasn't expired.
If you feel as I do, call your Dems in Congress. I am.

(53,031 posts)and it would make zero difference. They don't control the House. I expect they are being measured in their comments so as not to undermine credibility for what is inevitably coming.

(781 posts)public has clearly seen the evidence of Obstruction of Justice, undermines the gravity of trump's actions.
Why can't their message be the truth...that they are powerless because the rethugs will not do the right thing for our country?!

(53,031 posts)This is beyond what any of them say or media spin. Mueller is putting together a case that will have Trump dead to rights. When he produces that evidence, Trump will be impeached. The GOP is unlikely to act before then.

(7,627 posts)You dont go all gun blazing until you have a solid dossier with ironclad investigation. We all.know Trump is guilty but the evidence better be bulletproof to get 66 votes in the senate in order to convict. We only got one shot at it.

(209 posts)Already, some far-right wackos are posting stories about an attempted coup against Trump, and Trump continually accuses us of being bitter about the 2016 election.
We only get one shot at impeachment & conviction, and we need to get it right.
We need 23 Republicans in the House, and 19 in the Senate, to go along with this.
I think they will, but if we go screaming "impeachment!!!!" from the rooftops all the time, it's going to look less like we're getting to the bottom of a crime, and more like we're trying to overturn the results of the 2016, a "solution in search of a problem", if you will.
I appreciate impeachment being mentioned, but there's a reason the prosecutors are handling the optics of this.
They know what arguments will convince juries (members of Congress & the American public also count as juries here), and what arguments will scare people off.
If we take the Republicans through this step-by-step, and show an irrefutable, ironclad case, they'll have to impeach & remove Trump - either because they can't deny it any longer, or because their constituents are demanding it.
gratuitous
(82,849 posts)There is a LOT of work to be done before the House - under Republican control, remember - is going to consider impeaching a president from their own party. Right now, public opinion is running against President Trump, but not heavily against him. Trump's approval rating among Republicans has dipped to 75%, but that's still a hefty majority of Republican voters. Do you think Democrats would take action against a Democratic office-holder who still held 75% approval among the Democratic voters?
I want investigators to build a case, carefully and painstakingly. I want it water-tight, air-tight, tight-tight so that only the most foolhardy partisan would say that Trump is being railroaded. Right now, impeachment would have to proceed against the combined union of Republican congressional control, Fox News, and low-information Trump voters who don't think their boy has done anything wrong.
You get one shot at this. As Ralph Waldo Emerson observed, "When you shoot at a king, you must kill him." Get all your forces together, amass all your strength, erode as much of Trump's support as possible, and then, when public opinion is cascading in favor of impeachment, begin the proceedings.

(18,402 posts)You don't go yelling impeachment (especially if you are a powerless minority who could not initiate it anyway) until the investigations are further along, and incontrovertible evidence of malfeasance is in hand. The Independent Counsel has only just begun his tenure; the House and Senate Intel committees have not nearly completed their work. And the biggest missing piece--an independent congressional commission--has not yet even been called.
A smart prosecutor does not go to trial in haste with half a case, before she knows she can win, before the ducks are all in a row, and all the evidence air-tight.
There is much more to gain by patience and hard work than by simply yelling something. Or are you simply wanting the "lock her up" tactic of the crazy right?
Nothing could jeopardize our position more for a change of power in Congress in 2018 than a premature call for impeachment. Chill. These things take time and a whole heap of work by hundreds and hundreds of professional investigators and legal minds.

(3,077 posts)They have to build a case and gather the evidence. They don't want to leave anything to chance or make mistakes. And most certainly don't want to provide loopholes. It's a process that takes time. And even then, we will have to wait it out to see what happens.

Despite all of the talk from "sources" impeachment is a pipe dream.

(29,703 posts)there is more and more evidence that this was "a vast right wing conspiracy" and if it's narrowed to impeachment, we may not get all the SOBs. That's the only thing I can think of. I'd love it over right now too, but I want them all exposed and indicted, convicted and imprisoned.

(8,554 posts)It's simply what any prosecutor needs to do before any charges can be filed under common law.
Lawyers rarely give a shit if they look weak before a case is made, it's whether or not the case they are building is weak. Facts must be assembled in order to make a strong case.
Just because we can't stand the asshat who has taken over our government doesn't mean that we have the legal means necessary to get him out of the White House.
Jumping the gun on an Impeachment would be much worse than waiting the time it takes to gather the facts needed to prove that Trump is Impeachable.
