Montana regents plan to hike tuition but fees are in question
Montanas Board of Regents could face a hard choice next week when it is expected to raise student tuition for the next two years to cover state budget cuts.
That choice is whether the regents should also raise student fees, or just say no.
The regents will meet May 25 and 26 in Great Falls. Four campuses, including the three largest, are asking the regents to increase mandatory student health fees, largely to strengthen mental health counseling and suicide prevention an issue the regents last year targeted as a high priority.
Student senates at Montana State University and the University of Montana have endorsed modest health fee hikes ($6.75 and $7.68 per semester at the two flagship campuses). MSU-Billings is asking for $3.50. MSU-Northern is requesting a $20.50 health fee hike so it can hire its first mental health counselor.
