Born To Run The Numbers on the appointment of Robert Mueller as Special Prosecutor:

Excerpt:
Why might this unfold at heretofore unheard of speed? The answer lies in the reality that the impeachment and conviction of a president is one part legal, one part shamelessly political, and one part purely personal. The outcome will involve as many off-camera human judgments, opinions, and political calculations as it will smoking gun evidence and courtroom drama. But the most important point is this: once it is clear to Republicans in contested districts and states that an impeachable offense has been committed and perceive Donald Trump to be radioactive waste, it will be in the interest of all parties even Donald Trump to get this all behind us. Fast."

(3,947 posts)he will go down when they realize he is no longer a help in enacting their
unpopular program, and he is dragging their electoral chances down.

(13,903 posts)The GOP Caucus' seats will have to be in serious jeopardy......otherwise they are not going to smear themselves and the party with another Nixon.
As I like to put it, "Impeachment is purely political."

(39,343 posts)He's laying groundwork of being picked on and exhausted. I just hope his resignation doesn't slow the investigation into the rest of his cabal.
I too think this may happen very soon. There's not any active legislation that he cares enough about to fight for anymore. He's got no reason to stay there and be everyone's punching bag.
His use of repeated bankruptcies shows that he is familiar with strategic surrender.

(32,328 posts)It's only a matter of time for Mueller to smoke him out.
The other side of that is, he doesn't give a shit what the GOP wants. (He never did.)
When he sees the handwriting on the wall, he'll be gone.
The bad news is, he's pretty stupid when it comes to figuring things out. Very self-delusional to the max!

(13,133 posts)They will have a hard time getting their cake and eating it too. Once you think you have a grasp on one reality another one creeps up from behind and bites you in the ass. Three hundred million plus and there are enough smart ones that gumming up any making of an un-gamely approach even less likely
and to edit and or add: The other idea of always being able to do the way they want will work against them especially with the clock ticking

(2,159 posts)As much as I'd like this lunatic out right now, I think, in order to have a chance of taking the house back, it would be beneficial to drag it out until after the midterms. Passions wouldn't be as high if Pence was in, it would just be another asshole republican.

(775 posts)Great comment. It seems to me that if things go generally as the article suggests, the best scenario for Democrats and control of Congress is if the final resolution -- resignation or impeachment -- happens immediately prior to the mid-term elections. The stench of Trump will still be fresh, and there will be no time for Pence (or whoever) to have built support. This scenario would create the most impassioned electorate eager to "throw all the bums out." Thanks for the comment.
