Sorry, but you won't be getting a President Al Franken in 2020

Sorry, but you won’t be getting a President Al Franken in 2020

"Yeah, I'm not going to do that."

KATIE SERENA

Despite all the buzz, it looks like the Minnesota senator, and “Saturday Night Live” alum, will not be running for President in the next election. Sorry about that.

Al Franken, says he’s “flattered” by the amount of people pushing for him to run, but he has no plans to do so.“Yeah, I’m not going to do that,” he told People Magazine in an interview released earlier today connected to his upcoming book release. His family seems to be just as against it as he is.

“It’s not going to happen,” his daughter said.

His wife Franni added a firm “no,” though she considers it a sign of his success as a politician and liberal advocate. “It’s very flattering, really,” she said. “It’s kind of an affirmation that Al did exactly what he said he would do, be a work horse and not a show horse.”

1. I've been saying that for a long time.

I asked Franken outright once if he was considering running for President. His response was, "No way."

That was a few years ago. He hasn't changed his mind. He does like being a Senator, and takes that job very seriously, but has never really considered running for President.

2. Well, if we ever take back the senate, I'd love to see him as SML.

And I'd love to see traitor Mitch McConnell kicked to the curb.

3. There is something to be said about having strong, intelligent, progressive voices in the Senate.

Ted Kennedy clearly had Presidential ambitions. And even though they never panned out, he ultimately accomplished more in his almost 50 years in the Senate than he would have in either 4 or 8 years as President.

5. Damn. But I see his point. He's not addicted to huge crowds of people cheering his name.

He's there to do the work.

And your whole family runs when you run for president, and he may not want to do that to them.

6. I make it a point to not put a lot of stock into "no interest" comments like this 3 years out.

He may end up not running after all but it's early yet.

8. I remember when he ran for president on SNL.

I tried to find footage, but instead found this gem he hosted on C-Span from 1994. Sen. Franken gave a talk about SNL and political humor. Lots of SNL clips.
