I'll ask this again. Are there any Republicans not tied to Russia?
Congressional candidate Greg Gianforte owns shares in Russian index funds
$250,000 invested in funds with holdings in Gazprom and Rosneft
A Republican congressional candidate has financial ties to a number of Russian companies that have been sanctioned by the US, the Guardian has learned.
Greg Gianforte, who is the GOP standard bearer in the upcoming special election in Montana, owns just under $250,000 in shares in two index funds that are invested in the Russian economy to match its overall performance.
According to a financial disclosure filed with the clerk of the House of Representatives, the Montana tech mogul owns almost $150,000 worth of shares in VanEck Vectors Russia ETF and $92,400 in the IShares MSCF Russia ETF fund. Both are indexed to the Russian equities market and have significant holdings in companies such as Gazprom and Rosneft that came under US sanctions in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of the Crimea.
The holdings, while substantial, make up only a small portion of Gianfortes wealth. The congressional candidate, who made a fortune starting a software company which was later sold to Oracle, has assets estimated to be worth between $65m and $315m, according to his financial disclosure.

(5,730 posts)(electronically traded fund) in his portfolio, ishares, that holds Gazprom and Rosneft, does not make him a Russian sympathizer. An ETF is somewhat like a mutual fund. It's ishares, which is not Russian, even though the ETF holds Russian securities.
There are MANY valid reasons not to like this guy, including he is a Repub, an asshole, assaulted a reporter, does not have the temperament, and more, but th u s will make us look like we are grasping for straws.
Traders trade in and out of ETFs all day. I know libetals who have owned this ETF. I may have owned it myself, as I have made hundreds of ETF trades, but I do not think so.
He will not get special influence with Russia because of an American ETF investment, that owns Russian securities. IMHO.

(14,274 posts)That is the only thing that explains votes and legislation that undermines America's standing in the world and weakens and divides us domestically.
They want to poison our water. They want to poison our air. They want to destroy our environment. They don't want us to have health care. They want to shut down all programs that help the neediest of us. They want to ruin our children's chance for an education. They want to pack the courts and chip away our freedoms and rights for generations to come.
Their acts are not those of patriotic Americans. These are the acts of people who wish to do us real harm and destroy our way of life.

(5,730 posts)are tied to Russians, and maybe this guy is. I just don't think investing in an ishares ETF is evidence of a tie to Russia and those companies are probably in 50 ETFs, and also mutual funds. I have no idea, but it is a lot.
One common trade is ETFs that trade around BRIC (Brazil, Russia India, &China). In fact, it isn't a bad one now, as Brazil is in another state of crisis, and it is a good time to buy, w the assumption that things will settle and it will go up. There are other reasons for the other 3 countries. It doesn't make someone a sympathizer w Russia or China. They are US ETFs. It is a recognition of what the world economy, interest rates, the DT recent effect (spooks market in US, so looking elsewhere), decline of dollar. Anyway, it was probably a broker who put the guy in it. Thete are thousands of ETFs, more than mutual funds.
