He didn't want to charge him at all, but his office got deluged with calls tonight from people outraged by the fact that the Sheriff let Gianforte just walk away from the scene.

Hope it's better for Voting for Bob Quist for House that the sheriff didn't charge him at first.

Too bad there's no candid vid.. and he's caught red handed.

it would have been easy, presumably, to delay until late in the day tomorrow or later.

The maximum penalty is $500 and 6 months. I'm sure he won't do time, but it'd be awfully nice if he lost the election.

I heard a commentator say that something like 250k ballots have already been returned, and they expect only about 150k more, so there's a real possibility that this a**hole will suffer absolutely no repercussions for his barbaric behavior. Of course, the House Ethics Committee could intervene if he's elected.

There was a FOX news team present in the room when it happened, and there was an audio recording that supported their statements. They report that Gianforte grabbed him and then held him down while punching him. There had to be charges, but misdemeanor charges won't prevent Giaforte serving in office. Felony charges might have.

Money talks and bullshit walks.

We're at a loss for words.

And as people who wrangle words on a minute-by-minute basis, that doesn't happen often.

What happens even less — hopefully never again — is a Montana candidate assaulting a reporter. While there are still questions left unanswered about GOP House hopeful Greg Gianforte's altercation with Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs, eyewitness accounts, law enforcement investigations and records are all shocking, disturbing and without precedent.

That's why The Billings Gazette editorial board is also doing something without precedent: We're rescinding our editorial endorsement of Greg Gianforte.

Although we're greatly troubled by this action against a member of the media who was just doing his job, to make this an issue of media intrusion or even a passionate defense of the role of a free press during an election would be to miss the point...
