He has consistently claimed to be a Christian. I've always believed him.

It takes thoughtfulness and reflection to reconcile any religious faith with the things we know from science to be true about ourselves and the universe. I've wrestled with that personally, and some of the words I've heard President Obama speak sound very much like my own inner monologue concerning the mysteries of my Christian faith.

They're quite used to Palestinian and Syrian Arabs who are Christian. Why would they be suspicious of a mixed race man born in the US? We're the ones who are ignorant and provincial and it's killing us.
