Appeals court upholds block on Trump's travel ban

(CNN)A federal appeals court upheld Thursday a ruling blocking President Donald Trump's travel ban against six Muslim-majority countries.

The 10-3 ruling from the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals upholds a lower court's decision to halt core portions of the executive order indefinitely.

The ban was announced in March, but never got off the ground because federal courts blocked it just hours before it was set to go into effect. It would have banned people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen from entering the US for 90 days and all refugees for 120 days.

The court makes extensive use of Trump's comments during his campaign when he called for a full ban on Muslims from entering the United States as evidence against this executive order.

My Finish sister (high school exchange student decades ago) planned to come to the US for, perhaps, the last time to visit my parents. Her travel to Somalia was under the auspices of UN medical/humanitarian aid - and subject to lesser scrutiny (theoretically).

She applied in more than adequate time to obtain a visa for a UN event she was to attend about a week ago but, because her work took her to Somalia, they did not process her VISA application in a timely manner. She then tried to travel on a tourist visa - and the earliest they would even consider her VISA application was in August - 3 months after she was to appear at the UN (and take a side trip to visit my parents). Her entity had to send another individual whose travels had not taken them to one of the baned countries, and who could get a VISA in time for the meeting (even after waiting through the inactivity on my sister's).
