In his first trip abroad as the leader of the United States, President Donald Trump had multiple opportunities to illustrate his support of the U.S.s allies and to show his willingness to stand up to Russia.
Yet each time, he took the opposite approach.
At one point, his top adviser Gary Cohn suggested to reporters aboard Air Force One that Trump might be open to lifting NATO sanctions on Russia. The sanctions were imposed after Russia annexed Ukrainian territory, an action that also prompted the G7 leaders to kick Russia out of the group.
The discussion on sanctions and Russia came up at NATO tonight. It was a pretty broad discussion with a lot of NATO talking about Russian Sanctions, Cohn said, per press pool reports. Asked about the U.S. position on Russian sanctions, he added, I think the president is looking at it.

(1,129 posts)Is likely to whip out the gold sharpie and lift those bad boys thru an EO ... any day now.
Only way to prevent that is to hide the sharpies long enough to get him removed from office before he can sign the EO.
Which means some super serious (international or domestic) IC data deluge needs to take place so the KGOP will find themselves up to their eyebrows in turbulent floodwaters
& be forced to raise their hands for impeachment while reaching for a life preserver......

Moral Compass
(1,520 posts)It seems blatantly obvious that Trump is either being blackmailed or is delivering the goods after Putin helped put him in office.
I have observed him throughout the entire campaign and now throughout his entire presidency and he has never once said anything even vaguely negative about Russia or Putin. He has pretty much trashed everybody else at one point or another.
Just think about Putin's priorities
Making NATO an uneasy alliance would be number one if he is planning on a territory grab. There are plenty of indications that he is planning on doing exactly that.
He is looming over Ukraine. And there is a increasing evidence that he has designs on some of the other territories that abut Russia such as Latvia and Lithuania.
Putin also desperately needs us to drop the sanctions. The sanctions are impeding a lot of really lucrative oil and gas deals. Our secretary of state probably stands to profit if the Russian sanctions are lifted.
This is truly sickening. I never thought that I would see an American president so beholden to a foreign power. But I can't ignore the evidence that my eyes are seeing.
I'm very surprised that no one in the media has pointed out how Trump's NATO speech helps advance Putin's ambitions. I was very unsurprised to see this trial balloon go aloft the day after such a strange and discordant speech.
Remember the kompromat that the Russians supposedly possess.
