Rural America Is the New Inner City

“A Wall Street Journal analysis shows that since the 1990s, sparsely populated counties have replaced large cities as America’s most troubled areas by key measures of socioeconomic well-being—a decline that’s accelerating.”

“In terms of poverty, college attainment, teenage births, divorce, death rates from heart disease and cancer, reliance on federal disability insurance and male labor-force participation, rural counties now rank the worst among the four major U.S. population groupings (the others are big cities, suburbs and medium or small metro areas).”

“In fact, the total rural population—accounting for births, deaths and migration—has declined for five straight years.”

2. It's too bad their culture is like that. If only the men would step up and really be leaders

in their community. But I guess that's what happens when you have a culture of handouts like farm subsidies and rural development projects, they just get used to living off government cash, eschewing birth control and having lots of babies just so they can spend their assistance money at the Wal-Mart in the next town. There's just something about them, I guess. Bred lazy, or something.

I can't wait to hear rural whites get told that their misfortunes are all their own fault. That if they only married their baby daddy and fixed him a hot dinner everything would be all right.

I'm white and grew up in the rural Midwest. I know that people have troubles but I declare I am sick and tired of these selfish whiners who blame everybody else for the fact that they are so ignorant and racist they literally can't keep a job.

My mom was born in a deep red rural Appalachian county with drugs, gun violence and multiple generations of unwed teen mothers on welfare. But hey, they are white, Republican and go to church on Sunday, so it doesn't count.

10. Yeah, in the rural areas, people just get up and go missing. They aren't "dead" so no murders occur.
