Neither were the obvious choice for anyone other than the Russians.

Jared has quite the family story. His father disgraced the family and went to jail. Jared wants to avenge the 'wrongs' that were done to his father and make the family name great again!!! He marries the daughter of another real estate psychopath and tries to be a big wheel in NYC real estate. To prove how bold and badass he is, he makes a bunch of risky real estate investments but he overpaid and they don't pan out. So did he get in deep with the Russians trying to sort out his money issues and end up selling the Presidency to the Russians? Whoa. That's a story.

When he got overly anxious during the election, the reports were that Kushner would just talk quietly to him calmly for long periods of time in on the plane and Trump would chill. But Kushner never talks TO the press, so I have no idea what his voice even sounds like. That is so spy-like in itself. The guy on the margins who doesn't talk much but pulls all the strings. He would be the perfect go between.
