I listen to a couple Slate podcasts, plus some NPR-associated ones, and noticed today that every single podcast had someone out sick and someone broadcasting with ick. Rachel mentioned being ill last night. Sounds a little like campaign crud, but this is generally the wrong season for a respiratory virus.
I realize we have a toddler with his sticky fingers near the football, and thus we're all kinda distracted, and all the damn plants are having as much open-air sex as they can, so allergies are up... but has anyone heard anything?
I add that we've got a nasty crud running around Front Range CO, that seems to have been imported from the East Coast, given our local Patient Zero.

Okay, I'm going deep dive CDC/public health now. A bunch of broadcasters, journalists, and data scientists. There's gotta be a commonality.

(5,240 posts)our doctor said was going around and lasted a long time. He began coughing up some blood and could hardly get out of bed. After a month he weighed 126 lbs, then the doctor sent us to a pulmonary doctor. The doctor ordered a CT scan and saw something in his upper right lobe. Soon after he got home from the pulmonary appointment he coughed up a lot of blood. The doctor sent him to the emergency room. His oxygen level was 70%. After days of testing, and one night where he nearly died, they determined it was a fungal infection. My husband spent 12 days in the hospital, is on oxygen and will have to take an anti-fungal medication for a year. After insurance the medication is $1000 a month. Don't assume a cough that keeps hanging on is just a chest cold.

(9,808 posts)Parainfluenza and metapneumonic.
So the PSA - if you start feeling crappy, don't self-care this shit. Grab a mask, go to urgent care, wash your hands, lay in fluids, try to stay home if at all possible.

(9,808 posts)Parainfluenza and metapneumovirus are up, both regionally and nationally.
My bet (though I'm not an epidemiologist) is on Para. Timing is right.

(9,808 posts)Wash your hands. Don't touch your face. If you start feeling bad, get care. Viral means antibiotics are useless, but there's supportive care, and your lungs already have stress.
I've got difficult lungs, too. Respiratories suck.

(31,384 posts)on the 23rd overnight and flew home to North Carolina on the 24th. Last night my husband said
he was coming down with a cold and by this morning he was coughing, sneezing, blowing his nose
and generally feeling like he definitely has a cold. He was also awake a lot during the night coughing.
So, yes, he picked up something on the trip and it was probably in NYC or on the train from NY to New Haven.
