Our courts and our free press are proving an AMAZING firewall to fascism, GOP treason notwithstanding. WaPo has been KILLING it just like they did in the early 1970s. I thanks them from the bottom of my patriotic heart/
Rec for brave journalism and our amazing Republic

(17,382 posts)I cancelled my NY Times article a month ago after the NY Times hired Bret Stephens who then wrote an article explaining that the science behind climate change was still debatable, because Hillary Clinton lost, so how can you trust data? Yes, the NY Times actually published this crap. The NY Times has sold out by trying to be "fair and balanced" by pushing false equivalency.
https://thinkprogress.org/new-york-times-hires-extreme-climate-denier-after-hyping-itself-as-antidote-to-fake-news-441826c4071d
The New York Times which advertises itself as a defender of truth in the Trump era just hired an extreme denier of climate science as a columnist.
Bret Stephens was most recently deputy editorial page editor for Rupert Murdochs deeply conservative and climate-denying Wall Street Journal, where, in 2015, he wrote that climate change along with hunger in America, campus rape statistics, and institutionalized racism are imaginary enemies. He will now take those views to the New York Times.
Stephens is unusually extreme and divisive even for a climate science denier, also comparing scientists and those who accept their findings to Stalinists, anti-semites, and communists.
The scientific findings that Stephens has repeatedly dismissed as imaginary are routinely published in the New York Times itself. And in an August job description, the New York Times called climate change the most important story in the world. Stephens calls it hysteria.

(6,916 posts)The NYT has its problems: bothsidesism, Stephens, Clinton-bashing, Dowd, Douthat, and the shameful way their news section acts like they have never read Paul Krugman.
But on the whole, the NYT is still a formidable news source.

...also doing a good job in their political reports, even though they are also full of a lot of trivial fashion and celebrity stories.
The NY Daily News is pretty good too. More reporting than investigating but always with a Trump-exposing POV.

Same story but The News headline shows what a fool he was in Europe and The Post shouts how strong and masterful he was.

(5,210 posts)our intel community, including that of our allies, who have had the extraordinary courage to violate U.S. laws in order to bring all this information to our attention via the media. Without them, the media would be at a complete loss (to be charitable about it).
As bad as things are and as bad as we understand things might get, for now I am frequently overcome with amazement -- and gratitude -- to watch our institutions and our Constitution in action to keep a check on Trump's excesses and to start to bring him to justice. It's awkward, slow, halting at times, but it IS working.
At least for now. We have to make sure Trump isn't able to dispense with the Constitutional forces and institutions designed to prevent people like him from ultimately succeeding.
