Memorial Day

In January of 2005, a Bradley Fighting Vehicle from the platoon I was the Platoon Leader of was lost. 5 of the 7 people in it at the time died. This picture was taken a few days later during a fallen soldier ceremony on my base in Iraq.

I appreciate the concept of Memorial Day, but I hate how it is applied to veterans of my era. I would have fought for our freedom, but my military service and good will was squandered on the war on Iraq. Memorial Day should be a day to remember those who died in service to our nation, but I also believe it should be a time that we ask whether or not we as a nation were justified in asking of the sacrifices our service members have made. Blindly supporting wars is a huge disservice to our military. If we truly support our military let's make sure that we only send them into harms way when it is absolutely necesary.

And we thank you for your service, even if the cause was questionable.

Most people think Memorial Day is just for getting a 3-day weekend. Its not personal. I remember my dad in WWII, and my grandfather in WWI.
