Don't have the book on hand - apologies for any disinfo I'm writing here! - but I do so love this story -
So it's 1970, give or take. Can't find exact date, and sick of googlin today.
Bill is at his Fillmore East venue.
One fine day, he and some staffers are out back taking a break. Probably a "smoke" break, if you know what I mean.
So they're standing there, and this beat-up piece of shit van rolls up. Doors open, trash falls out, empty cans go rolling everywhere, and out step these way funkified, deeply hippie yet redneck-lookin' dudes who don't appear to have any clue where they are.
One staff member drops his head, and under his breath says, "Who in the fuck booked THIS pack of Southern loser yahoos?! Awww, man..." There was much grumbling amongst the staff, and they wandered back into the building.
Later that afternoon, all is quiet as the workers, hangers-on, and Bill are doing their work.
Then this "pack of yahoos" takes the stage for their sound check and they crank it UP and they hit it HARD, PEOPLE.
Every flippin person in the venue came RUNNING out of their respective offices towards the stage area, having no idea how - what - who was making this music that literally propelled them out of their seats and towards its source.
YEAH BABY
Next thing you know, "The Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East" is released, and I never leave home without it, all these 46 years later.

(37,457 posts)The Allman Brothers Band had first played Fillmore East in December 1969, opening for Blood, Sweat & Tears for three nights.[11] Promoter Bill Graham enjoyed the band and promised to have them back soon.[11]
