Jared Kushners Beleaguered Tenants

... "Bibi was an IDF Special Forces commando, while Obama was a community organizer,” Mr. Trump tweeted about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel in 2014. And, earlier that year: “America is at a great disadvantage. Putin is ex-KGB, Obama is a community organizer. Unfair.”

The idea of working with little pay and no fanfare to make people’s struggles less onerous is a sucker’s game for Mr. Trump and his cohort. When members of Team Trump play, they are never the sucker. They exploit foreclosures, promote legislation to benefit themselves, stiff workers and contractors and create multimillion-dollar scams.

For the past few years, Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, who is now in charge of vital parts of the president’s agenda, has been a landlord of often decrepit low-income housing. His subordinates aggressively sue tenants for the smallest infractions despite ignoring maintenance needs, and they pursue judgments even when the tenant seems to have been in the right. While landlord-tenant disputes are hardly new, tenants in Kushner complexes have complained that the company used legal action to hound them on thin or specious grounds.

Since 2011, subsidiaries of Kushner Companies, the family real estate business Mr. Kushner ran until January, bought 20,000 apartments in 34 complexes in Maryland, Ohio and New Jersey. An investigation for The New York Times Magazine and ProPublica, by Alec MacGillis, found that one major Kushner subsidiary, JK2 Westminster, had 548 cases on file against Maryland tenants. Hundreds of other cases have been filed there by individual Kushner apartment complexes."

One harrowing story — involving Joan Beverly, a probation agent who was named in a lawsuit brought by JK2 Westminster for $3,810.16 — epitomizes the way Kushner’s real estate empire has treated its tenants.

In 2010, Beverly’s daughter had moved out of a unit she rented months before her lease was up. Two years later Kushner Companies bought the complex she had lived in, assuming the debt that was owed. Kushner Companies sued Beverly for several months of rent, plus $1,000 in repair costs and a $10 fine for failing to return a laundry room card, according to the story co-published by the Times and ProPublica.

Beverly was dealing with pancreatic cancer at the time, which caused extreme financial stress because she was not able to work. In the suit, Beverly submitted evidence showing financial hardship, but JK2 Westminster persisted with its case regardless. The Baltimore County District Court eventually found in favor of Kushner’s company with a total judgment of $5,500 against Beverly.

She died two weeks later. The case is still pending in court, New York Time Magazine reported. While JK2 Westminster no longer exists as a corporate entity, the Kushner Companies is still the owner of that complex — and though he has stepped down as CEO, Jared Kushner is still connected to his family’s real estate holdings and fortunes.

Pubbies always bitch about having to pay for stuff they don't use. But when I ask how many of you have been in a lawsuit the normal answer is none. So I go on about attending jury duty and explain to them that they only see those of color when the attend the court house, but never look around and see how many white guys are streaming in. White guys like the tRump's and Romney's who fill up the court dockets with their bullshit suits. Causing me to donate my tax dollars for them to have the right to sue for profit.
