"Happy" Memorial Day. Maybe the most inappropriate sentiment ever.

It is no different than "enjoy the first anniversary of you Mom's death".

Memorial Day is to REMEMBER those who, in war, gave their lives in service to this country.

It to to remember DEAD SOLDIERS.

DEAD.

Gone.

Cheering is inappropriate.

Car sales hawked on TV are inappropriate.

Do all of that any other day of the year. Do it yesterday. Do it tomorrow.

Today is the day to remember those who were killed in combat.

Thank you.

It was the day the whole family went to put flowers on Grandma and Grandpa's graves and honor them, whether they served in the military or not.

But then our yellow-ribbon society decided to co-opt it for yet another celebration of the troops. Which now gives us three: Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, and, more and more, Independence Day.

Memorial Day - which in my extreme youth was still called Decoration Day - began in the US after the Civil War as a way to honor those killed in that war (and it started earlier in the old Confederate states then spread north).

There are cultures that have special days to honor all the dead - the Catholic All Souls Day, for example - but those haven't been co-opted. Yet.

We used the day to remember Grandma, who raised a bunch of kids on her own in a one-horse town in the middle of nowhere and showed them no end of love; but, then, we also did something nice for Grandpa, who didn't die in World War II, but made his own sacrifices.

We never grilled brats or ate champagne popsicles.

I guess my point was that this holiday used to be reserved as a day of reflection on all those who sacrificed before us, regardless of what they were doing.

We have forgotten where we came from in a way to allow us to know where we're going.
