since the early eighties. They think they're part of the elite because they're not one of "those people"; whatever their personal "those people" happen to be. Reagan's racist welfare queen lie played into their prejudices and fears. #CheetoBenito walked right into Reagan's shoes with the whole "immigrants stealing your jobs" bullshit. Trump didn't play to an ideology; he played to a defense mechanism. All the sad sick squirming they try to do to tell themselves they're not bad for letting the preacher and the guy on the radio tell them that greed is good just won't be relieved through admitting that "those people" were right.
