Esprit de corps is critical to function. How is NATO supposed to thrive when the members hate Chump and he hates them?
It's mind boggling.

I've looked at FAUX news and listened to winger radio and they don't give more than a couple of minutes TOTAL throughout the day on these issues.
While a fuckin email server got days upon days of coverage.

(2,003 posts)Trump voters loath NATO, believing it to be ripping off America. They think that Europe's cradle-to-grave safety net is achievable only because the United States picks up the tab for their defense.
Trump's voters are not going to be pissed when Trump does exactly what he said he was going to do until it directly affects them. Most of the people who voted for Trump have never been to Europe and never will. They think the entire continent has been overrun by Muslims anyways.
Now, establishment defense hawks in the GOP? That's a different story. Doesn't matter as Trump's voters loath those guys as well.

The GOP, once the party of staunch cold warriors and bluster and braggadocio regarding handling the Russians is now the Russian dictator's personal bitch?
The Presidency of the United States of America has been defiled on the world stage and in multiple insane self-inflicted domestic wounds?
The Congress - in hideous and blatant partisanship - abdicates all responsibility to country and patriotism in favor of party alliances?
The White House staff is an extension of the Trump family criminal enterprises?
I swear, there are scenes from the Godfather part I (Michael and Vito talking in the garden before Vito's death scene) and part II (Michael and Hyman Roth discussing the presidency) that make me cringe now.
We have a mafia-style family business running the country into not just AN iceberg, they are slaloming through the ice field and hitting ALL of the icebergs just for kicks. Every day that Trump remains in power we draw closer to cataclysmic warfare and destruction. This mad man, who is so self-absorbed that it numbs the mind, is charting a course to destroy American alliances that have maintained peace and security for 70 years in favor of serving as a lapdog to a Russian autocrat?
I feel like I am living in the beginning of Oceania's Ministry of Truth...

(99,705 posts)At least they can make an argument that in their milieu paths to success were limited as the latter part of the video demonstrates.
Did you watch the Sopranos. Tony tried that excuse with Meadow but it was sixty years later. She said what about Mario Cuomo ?

(99,705 posts)Tony Soprano told his daughter Meadow that he became a gangster because as an Italian American he was excluded from legal paths to success:
Tony Soprano: There was a time, Mead, when the Italian people didn't have a lot of options.
Meadow Soprano: You mean like Mario Cuomo?
That might have made some sense in Don Corleone's lifetime but it didn't make sense in Tony's lifetime. That's why Meadow pointed to Mario Cuomo who became successful the honest way. In any case the amount of Italians involved in organized crime was vanishingly small. At the Mafia's heyday 15,000 Italian Americans were involved in organized crime.

(24,355 posts)Idiot Corker thought that Trump did a great job on his first foreign trip.
It's becoming entirely possible though, too, that a large number of Republicans in Congress are entangled in the Trump/Russia situation and/or are otherwise compromised by Russia in terms of blackmail or, more likely than not, campaign contributions. I have noticed that, in recent years, right-wing Republicans have also been, at least rhetorically, embracing Putin, as a means of attacking then-President Obama and/or simply admiring his autocratic style of governance, which I'm sure that they would love to emulate over here with one of their own Presidents.

(9,932 posts)This go round voting for DeVos brought their real "loyalty" out in the open. They got away with that, so why not go for dismantling all social safety nets along with public education....skimming taxpayer money along the way as they privatize national resources, gut all banking/corporate/environmental regulations, throw in some massive tax breaks for the wealthy too. If turning a blind eye to Russia, or being downright complicit, helps them achieve their goal, so be it.
Honestly they know they can easily manipulate about half of the country to fear something new...Russia, LGTBQs, "Mexicans", ISIS, France (remember freedom fries?), Muslims, and now members of NATO including Germany. When hating on NATO ceases to get desired results they will hate on some other group and most of the sheep will blindly follow.
I once had complete faith there were enough in congress loyal to the U.S.A. and Constitution. Now I am not so sure.

(12,626 posts)At some point the "Republican Leaders", which is a nearly oxymoronic phrase, need to realize that a foreign power has taken control of the executive branch and that they, holding power in the legislature, are the only ones who can stop this madness.
I am not particularly optimistic.

But, really. I can't imagine this is working for their corrupt agenda, either.

(22,976 posts)And nary a peep from one Republican (other than a couple of asides from McCain); Fox News, Rush, Breitbart, et al support der Fuhrer unswervingly, providing the day's spin on #45's invariable crisis-du-jour; and his supporters are loving their guy. Russian government interference? Ah, that's just some wild liberal talk.
