(14,811 posts)I grew up around St. Louis and back in the 70's he had a concert at the (then) Kiel Opera House. I wasn't there for that one but I had seen him a couple other times. Apparently he came out for that show wearing a fur loincloth with a bow and arrows. He thought it would be funny to shoot arrows into the two wooden elephant heads above on either side of the stage, causing thousands of dollars of damage. That bothered me a hell of a lot more than a comedian making a video trying to be funny.

(28,257 posts)The Repubs control all three branches of the federal government, the Russians helped install a nutcase in the White House, a century's worth of social progress is being flushed down the toilet, and our country is no longer viewed as the world's leading democracy. So my question to you wimpy, self-conscious Democrats is this: Where did our polite behavior do us any good? Which leads to some other questions: When are you going to get ANGRY? What are you willing to do, to GET YOUR COUNTRY BACK?
I back Kathy Griffin's actions, and I want to see plenty more of the same sort of outrage.

(11,841 posts)Most people arent like the people here and on other sites, they dont really follow everything. They see shit like this over and over and its just going to push them to sympathize with trump. just like making a big deal out of getting 2 scoops of ice cream or a screen shot of what MAY be him with his eyes closed at a meeting. Stick to serious stuff and leave the bullshit to the crackpots.
A good example is the BLM protests. many people were backing them; then they just HAD to start invading restaurants & trying to block roads and a lot of people said "screw them". They ruined the public support by being assholes. this is the same thing
BumRushDaShow

BumRushDaShow
(128,962 posts)They have actually dug in via the establishment of a number of chapters nationwide and are making significant inroads into highlighting the problem and getting it "on the agenda" of not only the municipalities where they exist, but in coordination with other groups. And they have actually caused a seismic shift within the civil rights movement itself and its traditional organizations.
For example, just a bit over a week ago, the 108 year old NAACP made a major decision to dismiss their current head in order to "re-tool", explicitly because of groups like BLM, who are now doing what they once did in the past.

[*** N.A.A.C.P., Energized by Liberal Activists, Dismisses Its President
By YAMICHE ALCINDOR MAY 19, 2017
The sudden change at the top of the N.A.A.C.P. shows how the energy of liberal activists in the era of President Trump is forcing upheaval even in institutions like a century-old civil rights stalwart. Mr. Brooks was hardly reserved in his own activism. He was arrested in January for leading a sit-in at the Alabama office of Senator Jeff Sessions, trying to block his confirmation as attorney general.
But the board of the N.A.A.C.P. wants a new face of the organization. Mr. Russell and Mr. Johnson said the group needed to more effectively push back against Mr. Trumps stances on issues like voting rights laws, public education, environmental policy and the criminal justice system. The group, which has been eclipsed in many ways by the more youthful Black Lives Matter movement and the broader opposition to Mr. Trump, is embarking on a listening tour of cities across the nation to get ideas about how it can remain relevant.

NAACP Is Looking For New President, 'Retooling' Entire Organization
May 19, 20175:06 PM ET
<...>
Explaining the choice to replace Brooks, Russell and Johnson didn't identify a particular thing that Brooks had done wrong or even one thing that the NAACP, as a whole, had been doing wrong.
But they said the group needs to be stronger in advocacy and education, and better equipped to support local activism.
Brooks told the New York Times he was "baffled" by the choice not to extend his contract.
The NAACP, once the most prominent voice for the rights of black Americans, has recently been accused of losing relevance as new groups like the Black Lives Matter movement take the spotlight.

So no, they are not only around but are driving the stalwarts to change and adopt new methods for demanding rights.

(11,841 posts)And poor treatment of a guy who worked hard for the organization. I wonder what will become of the 100+ yr old institution after they've taken over. Who knows, maybe they've seen the error of their ways. I havent seen a highway blocking incident lately, maybe they've learned how to use honey instead of vinegar
BumRushDaShow
(128,962 posts)over the past century. When young whippersnappers like John Lewis from SNCC pushed for the NAACP and SCLC to get youth involved and implement some of the tactics you see today (e.g., sit-ins), which by their very nature are as "disruptive" as a highway blocking.
But of course in your America, n*****s are supposed to know their place.
7962
(11,841 posts)A sit-in is hardly anything like blocking a highway. but if you think thats great PR, have at it. You're just pushing more people away from the cause. I've seen it already with people far older than i am who have been involved for decades in protesting. The end result of that nonsense will be more people just driving thru them. And most likely not be punished. A sit in gets the media, but doesnt piss off the public
BumRushDaShow
(128,962 posts)but the perception about your post that basically tells POC to politely demand their rights or shut up.
A "sit-in" in a restaurant "blocked" privileged whites from being seated to eat.
A "die-in" (promoted by the early AIDS activists like "ACT-UP" "blocked" the public from walking on a sidewalk or even car passage on streets.
A "sit-in" in the lobby or lawmaker office in a state Capitol building "blocks" the righteous public from access to their lawmakers.
Keep digging.

(11,841 posts)There is PLENTY of ammo against trump without giving his followers incidents like this to take the focus OFF the bad stuff.
But everyone seems happy enough to go down the road of acting like fools; i just hope it doesnt backfire in '18.
You DONT hold up a severed head of a president no matter who the president is. And if thats seen as fine, then i guess all the awful ways people portrayed Pres Obama is just fine too. After all, THEY didnt like him, so why not? and further down we go...
7962

Griffin's act will also be investigated, as it should.
NO excuse for this type of crap from either side
xor
(1,204 posts)but rather that her actions will be used by the right to strengthen their base and essentially give them some extra ammunition. For however long we're going to be reminded of her actions whenever we point out something ridiculous that the right does. For example, if someone does something similar to whoever the next democratic president is or even to Obama/Clinton/etc right now. It also distracts from the real important stuff that is actually going on. Similar to how Trump's stupid tweets have a similar effect.
So me it's not about being upset that someone would be so "mean" to Trump, but rather that whatever enjoyment she got out of it doesn't make up for the potential harm it causes those opposed to Trump and the gain it gives to Trump.

To rethugs, it isn't what you do, it's who you do it to. Many of the posters on that cesspool site were confused as to why Democrats and liberals were not cheering over Comey's firing. The answer if clear to us: it's because it was a shitty thing to do, even to somebody we don't like. Therefore we condemned it. Our reaction was so completely outside of their way of thinking that they just could not wrap their brains around it. They actually expected us to applaud.
