I went to his follower page, chose a very distinctive name to keep an eye on and hit refresh. 20 seconds tops counting a little slow down from my kittens. The guy was 59 spaces lower on the totem pole. His "war room" is online and staffed by bots.
UPDATE- I just checked again and in 33 minutes he gained roughly 3k bots.
Went from 31,077,965 to 31,080,939 .
I think this bot army is not only to take control of all the narratives, but to boost his approval ratings somehow.

(2,857 posts)I follow him to see what he does next.
But these bots are getting ready to wage a social media war. It's already going on in youtube.

(80,708 posts)I just try to remind people about that other point, particularly the ones here who dont "get" twitter, and assume 30 million followers = 30 million supporters.

(32,688 posts)No need to add to his numbers.

(21,131 posts)They must have a way to stop them.
Twitter only cares about profits not our country.
Shame on you twitter.

(80,708 posts)You know how much work it is just to keep DU free of fakes, socks, zombies and phonies, of which there still are legion?

(5,523 posts)I guess you somehow generated phony followers? But how?

(2,857 posts)For the past 3 days he has been getting new followers like crazy. According to people that know better than I, 5 MILLION new followers in 3 days. They are Russian bots, not real people.
All I did was go to his follower page and look. A few seconds later the one I looked at was 59 further down the line. I took a screen shot today at 3 ish and he had 30.9 million followers. Just now it said 31 million.
Something is being done, no need to accuse those that are reporting it.

(5,523 posts)Your post wasn't clear to me. I assumed you became a follower and someone used your account to somehow generate more followers. You said you chose a name. To me it seemed like starting an account of some type. I don't use Twitter and have no idea how it works.

(13,524 posts)tweets myself, never signed up, but I can help you gain a teeny bit of understanding as to what is going on with the idiot's account today -
Be right back!

There are three columns up top: "tweets", "following" and "followers". The black number there is how many followers he has at this second. Write that number down.
Now, navigate away from the Sunkist Stalin's page for...one, two minutes, five? Whatever you like.
Okay, click back onto his page - now you will see that the number of followers has increased, eh? And apparently, that many new followers in that short amount of time, well, that never happens.
Followers are gained perhaps by a steady trickle, but he has gained a TON of them today.
Okay, now, just click on "followers". You will now see a long list of accounts. Most of them today are a cartoon profile of a human, okay? Now, click on the name of one of those cartoons, and you will see that that "person" has, say - as a "for instance" - no followers, two following, and has sent out maybe 8 tweets or something...this signifies that it is a spanking new account.
If you click on a few more of those cartoons, you will again see a newborn account.
I hope this makes sense, BUT, since I only read tweets, I sure ain't no pro, AND I honestly do not comprehend how bots are made and distributed...
Anyway, hope this helps, my friend!

(5,611 posts)problem all over the web these days as they used nefariously to give fake "support" (companies use them to post fake negative reviews of products from other companies for example or positive reviews of their own products).
On twitter they are used to make someone like Trump look like he has millions of new followers -- obviously twitter users who don't know any better will think these bots represent genuine new supporters. Bots almost always post just links or something very limited. You can read about them on Wikipedia:
