(3,040 posts)Since the Tea Party took over the GOP in 2010 most of the 'sensible' and moderate conservatives have since considered themselves liberals. I have witnessed it myself with a few family members. The few remaining self identified conservatives that remain are what we're considered the fringe whack jobs.

(18,828 posts)pass all kinds of "great" laws. How could he not, they have control of the house and senate. It hasn't happened because he is, beyond the shadow of a doubt, dumb as a box of rocks and bat shit crazy. They see it but can't quite wrap their heads around it. Is it possible Hillary was right? How is that possible? So they try to double down but it comes out as word salad because they don't have a leg to stand on.

(3,466 posts)knows he's cooked. Pure rage at the dying. I've viewed the Republicans' ratcheting up the hatred and fear-mongering this way since President Obama won. Cultural fear, racial anxiety - whatever - they know the days are numbered for their "kind" and America is changing. And I think the aggression is going to get worse, it's not over yet.

(63,221 posts)This. You would think they would bask in their victories, not lash out at the side who lost. I can't think of any other reason why their anger is just expanding besides the one you mentioned.
"A candle burns it's brightest before it goes out." Of course, they aren't bright and they aren't shedding any light, but I think that this show of "strength", force, rage, power - whatever you want to call it - are the death throes of the extreme right.

She's also a RW Christian nut. I had to unfollow her plus a lot of my husband's extended family are Trumpbots and it's not due to economic anxiety. They wouldn't like me anymore if they found out I was a liberal.

(21,506 posts)Sure they are idiots that listen to FOX but day after day the message on their is that trump is being persecuted by liberals angry over the loss.
FOX spews hate to them 24/7 it really is not the least bit surprising they run with it.

(82,849 posts)Admitting their error in supporting Trump is well beyond most of their capability. By contrast, for anything a Democrat does, good or bad, you'll see at least three opinions here at DU or at other liberal message boards. The grossest fuck up by a Republican is defended to the utmost by conservatives. It is not in their nature to criticize their own.

(2,851 posts)To the OP, I'd say the answer to your possible two scenarios is the latter option. The most vocal nut jobs have always been the most extreme part of that political party. They were and will be to their last breath on earth haters of "others" and the males and some of their female clan are also misogynists, science deniers and xenophobes. They will never change, and to the extent they can influence their willing offspring, their succeeding generations won't change either. The rethuglicons - those in power over the last ten to fifteen years - are nothing more than a modern iteration of the Robber Barons of the Gilded Age and in history before them. The republicans that were part of my upbringing (I'm a Dem and so were my parents) during the '60s and throughout most of the succeeding decades up until the era of GWB were more moderate because they had not been primaried by the Cruzes of the world. The entire party now has been captured by this group of cretins and they are too afraid to do anything about it, plus they feel it's to their benefit if they continue on this path because they have adopted a zero sum mentality and the Ayn Rand approach to life: I'm gonna get mine and take yours too. The majority of rethugs fall into this category in my opinion and the rest are the hillbilly dupes that are always easily led by demagogues like Twitler.

(10,943 posts)...I noticed. Recently, they have seen Hillary Clinton as a main threat. Her interview yesterday was mischaracterized by the media and led to rage in posts. Also, the Kathy Griffin (sic?) bloody head made the mad. One even shared a post with Ms. Griffin head being held - looking much more realistic than the Trump head picture.

(40,969 posts)They believe he is playing the dems & the IC. Obama used the IC to put some kind of dark government in place & the Con & his Russian master are going to take it down. They can excuse almost all of the Con's Russian activity & what they can't, they don't believe.

(60,186 posts)Just like alcohol suppresses inhibitions of people who commit violence only under the influence, Trump has somehow made these people think that if Trump can shoot someone dead on Fifth Avenue and not suffer any consequences, then so can they.
What they failed to notice was that while Trump SAID that, he never actually did it. While it might not have cost him any votes from Republican nitwits, it WOULD have cost him 25 to life in Sing Sing. That's the part the RWNJs conveniently neglect to remember.

(11,467 posts)I think our battle will be won only by getting rid of Fox News and other sources of fake news. I have hope when I read the average age of Fox viewers is 68 and probably going up every year.
I've read people under thirty have abandoned the Repuke party in droves and that gives me a little hope for the future.
