Is it possible to just reinstate it as it was, or will the US have to start from scratch all over again?

(273 posts)Just as he is trying to erase Obama's legacy, the next President (hopefully, someone reasonable and with a brain), can also undo what Trump has put in place.

(129,735 posts)and individual entities can (and many will) continue to do what they've already been doing to reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse gases because it's smart business and politically popular. There will be little immediate environmental damage as a result of this; the damage in the short term will be to the image and standing of the United States, which Dolt 45 has sacrificed in order to curry favor with the remaining deplorables. Even most big corporations were against pulling out.

(39,913 posts)Trump is going to re-negotiate a better accord. Which he could do anyway.
He's "pulling out" in order to keep his campaign promise. All he has to do is say he's pulling out. None of his supporters will check up on him to see if he'll actually do it. And if somebody should notice, he can just say he pulled out.

Let's just say it would qualify as a "low quality statement".

(114,504 posts)four years at a time. Since our safeguard against installing a populist lunatic--the EC--failed, no nation can possibly trust us not to elect another one just like him.
This is something I hope the GOP is waking up to, the damage he does will be mostly international, piled on top of the damage Stupid did. Here, it's mostly fatheads in red hats looking for fights. Overseas, it's a tremendous loss of trust and prestige.

(10,749 posts)But in 2020? That's the question. How much can the next Democratic president do to undo the fantastic damage this buffoon has created so far, to say nothing of what he or pence will do in the coming years.
IMHO, it will take a generation or more to undo the damage - politically, morally, financially, militarily (NATO), racism/white supremacy. As for the planet, states and corporations will continue to forge ahead on their own initiatives, so maybe the failure of the US as a nation to meet its goals under the Paris accords might not be so awful. But the rest of it? At least 20 years. After all, we're still dealing (badly) with the aftermath of 9/11, what with troops still in Afghanistan, the turmoil in Iraq and Syria, the rise of ISIS and terrorism. And that's only if we can get Republicans out in 2018 and 2020 and keep Dems in the WH for more than 2 terms. Otherwise? Who the hell knows.
