(35,356 posts)There were property and tax requirements for voting. If you didn't own property and pay adequate taxes--remember, the head tax, fireplace tax, windows tax, etc., all indicated some means and therefore seriousness--you didn't vote.
That's the problem with limiting the franchise, though. The people you cut out are still citizens. Whether it's an education requirement or other knowledge-based litmus test (say, reading?) or financial or property-based or with restricted based on genitalia or skin melanin-content. The only reasonable requirement is that they have bought in and be invested in both the system and the "enterprise" that is the United States, with its independence, integrity, and prosperity as goal 1 (okay, goals 1-3). That presupposes a certain amount of solidarity and social cohesion, which have their own prerequisites.
Lots of "alternative fact" "science" exists. Climate-change denying, anti-GMO folk, homeopathy and acupuncture and iridology people, the anti-vaxxers. The first is mostly (R), the others mostly (D) except for the anti-vaxxers (which are split between (R) & (D)). Stones and glass houses.
BTW, it's "know-nothing." We'll brush up your capitalization and hyphenation skills later, for now I'd suggest investing in and reading https://www.amazon.com/Chicago-Manual-Style-16th/dp/0226104206 .
