London mayor says US president is wrong about many things and that state visit to Britain should not go ahead
The London mayor, Sadiq Khan, has called on the British government to cancel a planned state visit by Donald Trump after being criticised in two tweets by the US president.Trump initially criticised Khan for his response to the London Bridge terrorist attack; though, in doing so, he misquoted Londons mayor. Khans office pointed out Trumps error later but the president responded by accusing Londons mayor of making a pathetic excuse.
Appearing on Channel 4 News on Monday evening, Khan said Trump was wrong about many things and that his state visit should not go ahead.I dont think we should roll out the red carpet to the president of the USA in the circumstances where his policies go against everything we stand for, he said. When you have a special relationship it is no different from when you have got a close mate. You stand with them in times of adversity but you call them out when they are wrong. There are many things about which Donald Trump is wrong.
Trumps tirade also appeared to act as a rebuke to the acting US ambassador to Britain, Lewis Lukens, who had put out a thread of tweets, culminating in a retweet of Khans statement.
I commend the strong leadership of the mayor of London as he leads the city forward after this heinous attack, the acting ambassador said.

(6,139 posts)Britain will be going through tough times renegotiating trade deals country by country. On top of the that, EU leaders are determined to not give any slack to Britain to prevent other countries from leaving the EU. They will be ok long term, Switzerland and Norway are not prt of EU but, perharps, the most prosperous european nations.
Regardless, trump and his administration are beyond incompetent, they will never be able to even draft a legitimate trade agreement.
Let's not forget that the purpose of this administration is to destroy the government. This means most if not all deprtments to be gone: EPA, Education Dept, Justice Dept, State Dept, Health Services, etc. Bannon hired the most incompetent and reckless people they could find to do just that and make a case for saving taxpayers money.
Trump has taken the entire world hostage so leaders of civilized nations are facing a lot of dillemas; long term planning of anything becomes more difficult and eventually global economy may reapond to that.

(14,176 posts)..that came out in the primaries mostly.
The thinking was that once he is in office for a few months and settles in, he will become more "presidential" and will be smart enough to know how to calm thing down and be more pragmatic etc. etc.. So at that time a State visit with all the regalia would be fine.
But of course he has only gotten worse as the weeks and months drag on. So I think there would be even bigger protests against him this time round. They should have gotten it over with.
In fact PM May probably called the election so quick partly because once she does invite him, and talks trade, all smiles and hand shakes, her popularity will bottom out at home. So its a preemptive strike this election call.
