I recently had a training on this for work. Sometimes we hear some outlandish or sometimes horrific things in my line of work. Micro expressions are those momentary reactions, like the eyes widening, smirks, eye rolling, frowning, smiling, etc... that pop up. They are difficult to control, and can sometimes have a significant effect on an interaction, especially if you are dealing with people who are vulnerable like victims of abuse.

They are definitely reacting to the disinformation coming out of this administration. I am sure Spicer sees it too.

I enjoyed the show and was fascinated by the montages of famous people all showing the same micro expressions when they lied or showed their contempt or anger in those very subtle but apparently pretty universal reactions.

You did not indicate your line of work, so maybe you can't. Keeping a straight face is often a challenge at a pediatric office, too. In late April, i had one for the books in my 40+ year career as a pediatric nurse practitioner.

I was talking to an 11 yr old boy and his mom, as part of his check up for 6th grade this fall. The mom indicated that he had something he wanted to ask about. She thought is was about his weight. Boy, was she wrong!

The kid had just had the 5th grade class on puberty earlier this afternoon. The information was completely new to him as there had never been any discussion at home about this topic. "He never asked anything," was mom's explanation.

When I asked him what he was wondering about, he said that now that he knew about this, "All I can think about is that I want to fuck someone."

I'm sure I must have had some sort of micro expression flit across my face -

We often go into situations that can be shocking. The hardest thing is to go into an environment that is offensive to the senses (smells and sights) and have a conversation with people in that environment. It is difficult to discuss things with perpetrators and not show a sense of judgement as well.

We all have those reactions. What I have found useful is to consider a very shocking situation in my head before asking a question or heading into an environment so that if it isn't that bad in reality, I am "underwhelmed". It works about 60% of the time.
