A new poll of likely statewide voters suggests the upcoming contest to replace Gov. Jerry Brown could be a competitive one.
And it could come down to two Democrats.
Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom continues to lead the race for California governor. However, hes now joined at the top of the list by fellow Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa.
The former mayor of Los Angeles has pulled to within 5 percentage points of Newsom, 22 percent to 17 percent, according to the survey from UC Berkeleys Institute of Governmental Studies. The institutes March poll had Newsom at 28 percent and Villaraigosa at 11 percent, even though the contest has remained low-profile.
Its an interesting race given that you now have two candidates from the same party who are in the lead, said Mark DiCamillo, the polls director.

I love Gavin's positions but his record as Mayor leads me to question his ability to run the state. Wish he would hang tight and take Feinstein's seat (I think she'll retire.

Newsom, while undergoing a divorce, was fooling around with his mayoral campaign manager's wife. Villaraigosa was involved with a Telemundo newscaster while married. Both of these events were in 2007. Hope they've learned their lesson.

(9,696 posts)Had high hopes for Viagrigosa, but he was a mediocre mayor. Newsom I don't know much about, but he gives the impression being to corporate. Both had stupid personal life scandals.
Of course, it's hard for anyone to follow in Brown's footsteps, but I'm hoping some other alternative shows up.
If I have to choose I'd go with Newsom becasue I don't want to give Viarigosa a second chance, but it's lukewarm for Newsom.
