Which Trump is quickly destroying.

The world faced an oil embargo which tanked every industrial nation. But among the richest nations our economy suffered the least. We have confused hard times with poor performance by Carter. By an objective standard Carter was first in his class.

I said he was too good to be MORE successful.

By this I meant that US Presidents seem to have had to lie, cheat dissemble, and engage in other questionable conduct in order to push their agenda through Congress.

Had Carter been willing to do that, he might have been more successful. However, something even more valuable - his integrity - would have been lost in the process.

He is indeed a saintly man. Moral and generous, thoughtful and compassionate. Represents the very best of America.

And NO, it's not glitzy and schmoozy and slick, a cheesy gold-plated tower of tawdry. All the gold paint and fancy crap and money (and the many illusions of money) in the world won't confer class. You can paint yourself gold, Donald, but that won't give you value. Come to think of it, I may have just figured out what that orange pall always covering his skin is all about! He wants to live in gold, emblazon his name in gold, cover his walls and buildings in gold, dye his hair gold, tint his skin gold, and even physically BE gold.

How far we've fallen.

as if peace is a weakness. Reagan made a deliberate decision to double the size of any military action the generals suggested, just to show contrast with the President who did not drop a single bomb his entire presidency. The only military action was the operation to rescue the hostages from Iran.

It's awesome that he outlived Reagan, Nixon, and Ford.

There are no metal fences between the two. One time a few decades ago, Amon Carter had a majority stake in American Airlines, was flying first class, and invited a bunch of his friends, who were flying coach to join him. The flight attendants were getting tired of stumbling over his pals, and Amon told them to deal with it. One of them got angry (understandably so), and made the mistake of asking him, rhetorically, or so she thought, if he owned the airline. When he said, "yes," and got it confirmed by the passengers and the pilot, she backed down. So did Amon, and told his friends to stop impeding the staff, who were only trying to do their jobs.

Jimmy Carter seems the kind of man to whom the curtain separating the two classes was nothing more than a piece of cloth, and would have gone back to the main cabin to greet everyone without a second thought, even if he were in First. He would have had to make time, though. DC to Atlanta is a route I have taken often, and it is not a long flight.

One time, I was meeting Howard Dean for a train trip from DC to New York. He told me what train he was on, so I could get a place on the same one. It turned out to be some local costing $40, and Howard could easily have afforded the Acela at three times the price. This was after he was no longer DNC Chair, so it was a private trip.

and tried to block him and painted him as weak. They tried to embarrass him with is brother, Billy, and mocked his faith, believe it or not. It wasn't as vehement as with President Obama, but very similar without the racial hatred thrown in.

The Republican Party has been a cancer on our country for decades, hopefully culminating with the current Republican shit-storm we are living through right now. May the GOP die a quick, but painful death and be replaced by something much much better.

President Carter was returning from an Asia conference and connected through Portland. On the flight to his Georgia home, he walked through coach and shook every hand on the plane. It is one of my most cherished moments.

The Carters both represent the American values that I long to see in politics. I am not a Christian, but sometimes, when I am tempted to look at Christians with sarcasm and derision, I think about the Carters, and how their faith has driven them to be the quiet, humble leaders that the country needs again.

at an Atlanta Braves' game. It was back in the days when they were playing in old Fulton County Stadium. They were down low near the Braves' dugout. That's the closest I've been to any current or former US President. Saw Richard "Yes You Were A Crook" Nixon's entourage drive by not far from the White House once when I was working in Washington. I managed to keep from throwing up though.

There is no question, Jimmy Carter may not of been the best President, but he is by far the greatest former President.

My sister was especially touched by this as she had campaigned for Jimmy Carter when he ran for Governor of Georgia when she was a high school student. He and Roselyn are wonderful people and one of the few reasons that give hope to those of us who are members of the Democratic Party who live in Georgia.
