I am 75 years old. I have been a registered Independent for over 50 years. Recently I had a discussion with myself, which went something like this?
Q: What's the last time you voted for a Republican president?
Answer: Uh, I don't remember.
Q. Would you ever vote for a Republican again?
Answer: No, I don't know what I am, but I definitely know what I am not.
Q. Then what are you waiting for? So I went online and registered for the first time in over 50 years as a Democrat.
Now, as to what I am as a Democrat is somewhat confusing to me. Am I am centrist Democrat, a Socialist Democrat, and how do the labels "progressive" and "liberal" get attached? I note a wee bit of tension here sometimes between Bernie supporters and others in the Democrat party. How do I know what I am?

Do I believe government should guarantee everyone a real living wage?
Do I believe corporations have too much influence on both parties?
Do I believe that having troops in more than 100 countries around the world is not necessarily a good thing?
Do I believe the United States has a class structure and the working class of all colors is getting screwed?
Do I believe that the United States is no longer "the indispensible nation" or the "greatest nation on earth," or that it never was either of those things?
The more yesses you have, the more you are a progressive and the less you are a centrist.

(114,509 posts)It means you'd vote for an old yellow dog on the Democratic ticket before you'd vote for a Republican.
That's about where I am these days. A Republican would have to fart flowers to impress me and I still wouldn't vote for him.
I'm not quite your vintage, but close.
