He has announced his candidacy for Governor of Michigan, running as a Democrat.[1] He served as the Executive Director of the Detroit Health Department and Health Officer for the City of Detroit from 2015-2017. Appointed at 30 years old, he was the youngest health commissioner in a major US City.
Previously, he was Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University. He is an internationally recognized public health expert, and the author of over 100 scholarly articles, abstracts, and book chapters on public health policy, social epidemiology, and health disparities.[2] His essays on public health policy have also been published in the New York Times,[3] CNN,[4] the Hill,[5] the Huffington Post,[6] the Detroit News,[7] and the Detroit Free Press.[8] On February 9, 2017, the Detroit News reported that El-Sayed will resign his position as health director to run for governor of Michigan in the 2018 Democratic Party primary.[9]

(108,512 posts)Because otherwise why does it matter who we run if the GOP will just hack their way into office? Fix the voting machines first, then we can matter who runs against Trump / GOP candidate.

(1,622 posts)...Harris could actually become the first female POTUS.
It's hers to lose.

And I understand why my guy, Jay Inslee, wasn't listed. He isn't so well known yet. But hopefully that will change.

(80,708 posts)No "marquee" candidate that thunders into the room with a presumption of being automatically "entitled" to the thing, sucking the air out of the debate and bullying the rest of the party into falling into line.

(45,806 posts)our lineup. I dearly love Joe Biden & Hillary, and think any of them would have made good Presidents,. However, I think it's time for the Democratic Party to get with the 21st Century. We need younger candidates throughout the Party at every level and every State. I'm beginning to see some very impressive candidates just in the last 6-9 months. We have time until 2018...not a lot of time, but enough to get a lot of good people to run for EVERY OPEN SEAT IN EVERY STATE!
IMO, the Pubs have been doing a lot to help US elected. Lets all work to make that happen!
