Former RNC chair Ed Gillespie projected to win; Northam wins Democratic gubernatorial primary in Virginia

By Gregory S. Schneider June 13 at 10:24 PM

BREAKING: AP projects former RNC chair Ed Gillespie to win. Gillespie has been a lukewarm supporter of President Trump but cast himself as a true conservative who will cut taxes and promote business. He narrowly defeated Prince William County Supervisor Corey A. Stewart, who built a campaign on preserving Confederate monuments, and state Sen. Frank Wagner, a 25-year veteran of the General Assembly. Gillespie will face Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam in the Nov. 7 general election.

Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam won the Democratic nomination for governor of Virginia Tuesday by an unexpectedly wide margin, but Republican Ed Gillespie was locked in a surprising fight with Donald Trump acolyte Corey Stewart for that party’s nomination.

With about 95 percent of precincts reporting, Gillespie had a razor-thin lead of less than a percentage point. State Sen. Frank Wagner was a distant third.

The nation was watching Virginia as a political laboratory for how the parties handle the deep divisions that followed last year’s election of President Trump. Perriello channeled the energy - and endorsement - of progressive leader Sen. Bernie Sanders in trying to shake up the Democratic party, but fell short in his bid to bring in new voters from among the young and working class.

Gillespie is going to be a hard sell to the Teabaggers. They will show up though.

Northam gets votes in areas that aren't Dem strongholds like the Eastern Shore where he's from.

It's all going to be about turnout.
