Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsOh, we're "angry" and "hostile" now, huh?
Somewhat predictably, a bunch of voices from the GOP are out making the rounds already, screeching that after the endless parade of right wing shooters/murderers all being Lone Wolves Who Couldn't Possibly Have Been Motivated in Any Small Way By the Perpetual Right Wing Outrage Media Machine, today's shooting (well, the first one. There was actually a SECOND mass shooting.) is 100% the fault of the Entire Left and their unfair criticism of the Poor Put Upon Victim in the Oval Office.
Ok.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOU.
Seriously, fuck right off forever.
And before we move on, Fuck You Too, James Hodgkinson. Fuck you for thinking you have the right to gun down any human being who disagrees with you. You're a murderous piece of shit and you're no different from any other murderous piece of shit. You're Dylann Roof. You're George Zimmerman. Fuck you for all eternity.
Now, for Newt and co. I believe we were at "fuck off."
You want to blame anger on the left for this? You think we should "tone it down?"
No.
FUCK no, in fact.
You're right, though. We ARE angry.
We're angry you've thrown the full weight of one of our nation's two great political parties behind a cheap con man, a petty crook, a serial sexual abuser, a minority-blaming fear-monger, a racist sack of trash, a wannabe authoritarian doing all he can to knock down the fundamental pillars of American democracy
We're angry you're trying to steal health care from millions of us just to give a fat stack of money to your billionaire donors.
We're angry that you've pulled us out of the Paris Climate Agreement, that you pretend climate change is fake in order to better do the bidding of the fossil fuel companies that fund your party.
We're angry that you refuse to conduct oversight as the President and his grifter family repeatedly break the law doing all they can to use their office to line their own pockets.
We're angry that you stand silently by as the President attacks the judiciary and the press, as he lies about voter fraud. Obviously we're angry that you stand behind a dirtbag who incited violence time and time again on the campaign trail, and somehow act like any criticism of him, however legitimate, is to blame for this morning's tragedy.
We're angry that you shield the administration from the consequences of their crimes. That you refuse to hold them to account for their perjury and their obstruction.
We're angry that you're trying to destroy Planned Parenthood, that you don't believe women have the right the make decisions about their own reproductive health, their own bodies.
We're angry that you refused to recognize LGBT Pride month, that you act like the great civil rights battle of the 21st century is fighting to allow bigots legal cover to humiliate and discriminate against their fellow Americans under the comical guise of "religious liberty."
We're angry that you're shitting on our constitution in a cowardly, fear-driven attempt to impose a religious test on refugees and immigrants.
We're angry at the surge in civilian casualties in the increasingly unsupervised military actions in the Middle East.
We're angry that you're trying to cut everything from medical research to the State Department to NPR to meals on wheels just so the richest among us can be a little richer.
We're angry that you're trying to sell public lands to fossil fuel companies. We're angry that you're selling out public schools. We're angry that you're trying to steal away our hard-won consumer protections to make it easier for predatory financial institutions to take advantage of us. We're angry that you're attacking net neutrality.
We're angry that you find yourself in power at least partially because of the malicious actions of a hostile foreign adversary, and that you're doing everything you can muster to cover up for them, to shield those who benefited from accountability.
And yes, we're angry, by the way, that you've done everything in your power to make sure that guns, even semi-automatic guns with high capacity magazines, are pathetically easy for anyone to get ahold of without trouble, even domestic abusers like the man who shot up the GOP congressional baseball practice this morning. You may recall a few weeks ago, when you repealed a regulation that made it harder for the mentally ill to purchase firearms. We're mad about that, too. We're angry about all the senseless, useless, utterly preventable gun deaths, from Sandy Hook to Aurora to Pulse to the shooting at a UPS facility in San Francisco just today, all enabled by your shameful servility to death merchants in the NRA. We're not just angry about the mass shootings, of course. We're angry about the children who die when they find their guardian's unsecured gun. The victims of gang violence. The countless women murdered by abusive partners. The suicides that need not have been. The arguments that turned fatal because a firearm was near. The law enforcement officers killed by armed criminals. And all those lives lost just from gun accidents. You're goddamn right we're angry.
In short, we are, you're right, mighty fuckin' angry about a whole bunch of shit that we are 100%, completely, totally, overwhelmingly CORRECT TO BE ANGRY ABOUT. Anyone who loves their country, their planet, and their fellow human beings is going to be angry about this shit.
And now, we're even angrier at the bullshit double-standard you're applying to this tragedy in contrast to all the others. That you have the gall to attempt to order us into silence while you keep destroying our nation under the bumbling "leadership" of the petty tyrant goon you're all so willingly enabling is as galling as it is laughable. I feel like I'm repeating myself, but Fuck Right Off.
We're not shutting up, Newt, sorry. We'll continue overwhelming your call boards, protesting at your town halls, and marching in the streets. We will continue to meet your horrific agenda with the hostility it so richly deserves. And come election night next year, we're kicking your sorry, collaborating asses straight to the private sector.

(58,785 posts)all the various types, from fairly mild to batshit crazy, because there aren't enough of most to notice. Together, though, there are enough that the threat of them joining the far right against us is scary. That extremely dangerous alliance is a big part of what happened in Germany. They overwhelmed decent mainstream people who knew their advanced white Christian democracy was a shining example for the world.
Progressive dog
(6,917 posts)have agreed with the first part of your post.
Our society has many people who are not white, we accept many who are not Christian (and we have lots of flavors of Christianity) and we are an advanced society that has never been "overwhelmed" by the likes of the Nazis or the communists.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)the various skin colors here would change anything? People are human beings everywhere.
The fact is that in the pre- WW2 years, when Europeans heard of genocide, it was mostly far away committed by people of other colors and religions. They didn't imagine it was anything that people like them -- educated citizens of advanced, white, Christian nations -- would or could be capable of, certainly not in the 20th Century.
Well, we are. And in America WE (the big "we" of all humanity, not just whites) are not less capable of atrocity because WE are far more diverse than Europe was.
Btw, Jews were only about 1% of Germany's population. Most people didn't even know any, or hate them. You might keep in mind that Muslims are even fewer here these days. Their tiny numbers make them much better victims than our Hispanic and black groups, and both small groups are in fact being demonized and targeted for hate right here, right now.
Progressive dog

Or right wing extremism or left wing extremism.
Or religious bigotry or anti-religion bigotry and hate.
Or political bigotry and hate.
Phew! Put that way, you're right. It couldn't happen here.
Oh, wait. Political scientists are measuring growth in political extremism on BOTH the right and left on America. A good 2/3 of our people have great hostility toward the other party, a large number of those unreachable by truth. As we see this increasing demonization of the other right here on DU.
It's no longer just a right-wing thing. Large numbers of citizens are developing increasingly extreme viewpoints, and some are beginning to look for extreme solutions.
Progressive dog

(11,841 posts)Jews were fairly well assimilated in germany and had been. They also never attacked Germany or called for it to be a Jewish state. Now we have attacks fairly often by muslims, either immigrant or native, and calls for violence from far flung "leaders". And the rarely mentioned fact that in many countries in the EU muslims do not assimilate into the host country very well. they have no desire to do so. Unlike most immigrants to the US, who wanted to become part of the society as soon as possible. Non-assimilation is the bigger problem that seems to get little attention. of course you're going to feel "left behind" if you refuse to become part of the society you live in.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)This was not an invitation to support arguments for targeting Muslims.
Btw, my husband's a Jew, our children half Jewish. I know what to think of antisemites, and if my family were Muslim and being targeted it would change nothing -- including the identities of most of their enemies.
We would all benefit from reading up on bias (the word psychologists and social scientists use for bigotry and racism). It is part of a person and comes from within that person, or not. It's not imposed on them by their would-be victims.
Most people with that in them are actually disposed to bias against almost all groups but the one they identify with, though at any point in time they may be more passionately hostile toward one group than others. This, of course, could always change with the lighting of a torch by some bad but charismatic leader who wants to turn a crowd on some other target. And often does.

They investigated Clinton for yrs to find a lie about getting a BJ in the White House. Seriously, they investigated for years for that, now they say we should move on from investigating whether the current admin colluded w/ a foreign govt after several months.
Back in the early 00's they were the 1st to write legislation in closed door meetings w/ no Dem input. When we turned around and did it under Obama they cried from the roof tops.
Look at how they did all they could to block Obama and nearly drive the economy off the cliff w/ a default. Now Dems are laughably called "obstructionists".
Look at how the Tea Party got the right wing riled up back in 2010, now supposedly we're not allowed to do that? I had a friend tell me he was at a campaign even for our now congresswoman, Jackie Walorski, who said she would "hunt Nancy Pelosi down in the bathroom if she had to to 'give her a piece of her mind". None of this was wreckless??
Waa waa, obviously we dont want to physically harm the Republicans, but they've been dishing this shit out for close to 25 yrs now through the talkers on radio and fox news. they've created a completely alternate universe where facts are "alternative". We're going to be attacked in some strong way, and that will be the excuse they use to completely shut-down the investigations, and consolidate power into him.
The man displays all 14 of the 14 characteristics of a Fascist dictator. He leads a propaganda campaign the likes of which Goebbels would envy. They will manufacture a nasty disaster before they allow him to fall, and it will scapegoat one of the named "enemies" of Muslims, "illegal immigrants", GLBT's, or some liberal/progressive group.
Mark my words, several things will come of this:
1. The media will be used as a scapegoat by them, and this will be used to, at the least, reduce the press clause of the first amendment.
2. If we think the Con's on Capital Hill have treated Democratic Party members, and leadership harshly so far, you haven't seen anything yet.
3. There will be a law (may or may not be passed) put on the table that specifically will target Democrats, liberals, progressives, and minorities gun rights while simultaneously increasing the gun rights for the Trump race.
It would not surprise me in the LEAST if this threat was known, staged, or willingly allowed by #45 and his winged monkeys.

I am so fucking angry at where we are right now, and the things that are being done are, and will continue to have a big impact on my family - especially my children. I am FUCKING ANGRY! Yet I feel defeated, helpless, and hopeless. The news is a constant barrage of FUBAR - worse than ever. I try to insulate myself from it a bit by not watching or reading a lot of news. (430 posts)What I'm afraid of is this may just be the beginning of a sad trend. And not just about hatred of one man or one party but about how it will personally affect people's lives.
Imagine if the idiot's health care package goes through and millions lose any type of health care coverage. Further, should someone be told his or her wife, husband or child unfortunately will die because they can't afford decent or life-saving care, some will make a choice when they lose everything to try to save a loved one but can not. And when that person who has lost everything because basic health care was beyond their reach and finally realizes how it happened, they aren't going to be concerned whether he or she voted for either candidate or even didn't vote. That person could feel there's no other choice than taking some kind of, in their mind, justifiable action.
And when they realize bullets are a lot cheaper and easier to come by than finding bankrupting their lives trying to pay more money than they ever had in their life for health care, I think I can see a choice being made.
You can weigh all the "good thoughts" you want, but the bottom line is they will feel someone was responsible and could have prevented this. And they may just take matters into their own hands, because they feel they have nothing left to lose and are angry at...someone for their situation.
Yes. I think this may just be the start of something we hope won't happen but looks as though it will.
When people no longer have anything to lose, they won't care whose fault it was, even if it was their own.
And to think the media might have possibly prevented this, maybe as early as 2001. But they had money to be made for themselves, investors and owners...none of whom seems to give one damn about whether anyone else tries to exist.
Maybe I'm wrong.

(2,067 posts)...and we ain't correct about that one. The ACA didn't provide me "healthcare" by giving me the option to buy into a taxpayer-subsidized exchange plan with a $5,000 deductible. It simply provided me the option to buy into an insurance plan that I then can't really afford to use.
The ACA isn't providing healthcare to anyone. Instead, it's propping up a dying and incredibly inefficient and wasteful health care funding approach that we claimed, at least in 2008, needed to be replaced. Instead of replacing it, we actually further ENTRENCHED IT. The passage of the ACA was a hypocritical mistake that needs to be replaced with single payer pronto, and the more we defend it, the more hypocritical we look.

(100 posts)As I get older, I find myself ranting to more and more of these damned things that make life irritating; - call centres, supermarket tills that go wrong, Brexit, the stupidity of humans in general, etc, but I envy you the terrific prose, the lucidity and the totally justified outrage of your words. Wish I could do the same.
I suppose it is not worth criticising the black and white nature of UK politics, but then we have not been blessed by Hurricane Donald. May I send my apologies that you have to suffer the many indignities of having him as a leader; all I can say is that when you are at the top of the Wheel Of Fortune, there is just one direction, and imagine the parties and jubilation when he is on the way down!
The most mild-mannered equable person will wait in line to kick the monster and desire to humilate him in the most personal way possible.
A Very Good Post.
